When using the WhatsApp application, many of us may have accidentally deleted chats when intending to add a conversation shortcut, then pressed Yes out of habit, resulting in lost messages. It's frustrating.
But don't worry too much. Follow these simple tips to recover those accidentally deleted messages.
1. Restore Recent Messages
Here's how you can recover messages from the past 7 days. Simply uninstall WhatsApp, reinstall it, and log in. Messages from the last week are backed up. To recover them, tap Restore. Everything deleted within seven days will be restored. This is WhatsApp's daily backup feature, which occurs at 4 AM system time and is saved on your SD card.
2. Restore Older Messages
- Manual Method
Step 1: Navigate to the following path on your SD card: / sdcard / WhatsApp / Databases. You'll see files like 'msgstore-YYYY-MM-DD.1.db.crypt' where 'YYYY-MM-DD' represents the corresponding year, month, and date.
Step 2: Rename 'msgstore.db.crypt' to add 'OLD' or any character to preserve the file. Then, check the files below: select files marked with different dates. Choose the file you want to restore - the one you accidentally deleted before - and rename it to 'msgstore.db.crypt'.
Step 3: Uninstall WhatsApp, then tap Restore if prompted. Files saved as 'msgstore.db.crypt' will be restored, and your old messages will be recovered.
- Using a Third-Party Service Method.
Visit the website https://www.recovermessages.com, select the database file from your Android phone's SD card, accept the terms of use, and press Scan.
After scanning, read your messages by clicking the 'Registers Recovered' tab. You can only extract and read old chat messages, but you cannot restore them back to your WhatsApp chat history.
- Finding Deleted Images, Videos & Audio
Navigate to File Manager, within the WhatsApp folder, open the Audio, Images, or Video folder depending on the media you want to find. Scroll through the list to locate the file.
