The Tsingy Stone Forest is famously known as one of the most treacherous terrains in the world, with a series of towering, razor-sharp rock formations.
Tsingy Stone Forest, renowned for its treacherous terrain in Madagascar
Stretching along the remote western coastline of Madagascar lies the famous Tsingy Stone Forest. The Tsingy forest is also referred to as the “knife forest” with its sharp, jagged rock spires, some reaching heights of up to 50m, with some rock formations towering as high as 70m. The name Tsingy, meaning “a place where one cannot walk” in Malagasy, was coined by the locals.

The Tsingy Stone Forest is divided into two areas, with the northern part being a natural reserve, while the southern part is the Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park. The wildlife in Tsingy is distributed according to altitude. Below the towering “sky-piercing daggers” lie deep gorges, damp caves, and areas devoid of sunlight. This serves as an ideal refuge for endangered species such as the fossa. With its unique terrain, mangrove forests, and diverse bird, lemur, and fossa populations requiring conservation, this area was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1990.
