The basic function of the Action Center is to display pop-up notifications about potential system hazards, application statuses, storage drive capacities, and more. If our Windows system has antivirus software installed and firewall services enabled, then our operating system is relatively safe. At that point, we can turn off the Action Center to avoid feeling irritated by notifications.
Guide to Disable Annoying Notifications on Windows
System warnings, firewall alerts, harmful viruses, etc., appear as depicted below.
Step 1: Access the Action Center
Method 1: On the Taskbar, left-click or right-click on the Action Center icon located on the right side of the screen, then select Open Action Center.
- In the next step, choose Change Action Center Settings.
Method 2: Navigate to Control Panel and select Action Center.
- Then, choose Change Action Center Settings.
Step 2: The main interface of Action Center is divided into 3 distinct sections
- Security messages section includes Windows Update, Internet security settings, Network firewall, Spyware and unwanted software protection, User Account Control, Virus protection, Microsoft account, Windows activation. Displays notifications when there are security-related issues with system software.
- Maintenance messages section includes Windows Backup, Automatic maintenance, Drive status, Device software, Startup apps, Windows troubleshooting, Homegroup, Files history, Storage spaces, Work folders. Displays notifications when components such as drives, applications, etc., encounter issues during system operation.
- Related settings section includes various online support options, direct online issue submissions,...
Step 3: Choose to receive or not receive notifications by ticking or unticking the appropriate boxes.
Step 4: If you want to completely disable Action Center, you can follow these steps:
- Navigate to Control Panel and select Notification Area Icons
- In this step, choose Turn system icons on or off
- Under the Action Center section, select off, then click OK. From now on, no notifications from Action Center will appear.
With these 2 methods, we can disable notifications or turn off all notifications from Windows.
- Note
- Specifically on Windows 7, when installing an application, removing an application, or updating Windows packages, sometimes a dialog box appears with the message 'Windows Explorer has stopped working' or 'Windows Installer has stopped working'.
In this notification, if users select Debug or Close program, all data within the application will be lost. Therefore, if we want to avoid such situations, we can edit the Registry to disable the notification.
- Go to Computer, and navigate to C:\Windows. Double-click on regedit.exe to access the Registry.
- Access HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/QMClient/Windows/DisabledSessions. Look in the number (1) pane for the MachineThrottling key, if it exists, delete it, then restart the computer.
Action Center can cause us to lose focus while working, but it's a relatively comprehensive system status notification program. Before turning off Action Center, it's best to ensure that services and operating system security are functioning well and can minimize risks from external threats.
