Just 1 month after acquiring Squad, a video calling and screen sharing app, Twitter is at it again. This move aims to integrate Squad's team into Twitter's design, engineering, and product teams, as Squad officially ceased operations on December 12th, the same day the announcement was made.
Now, the social media platform Twitter has acquired another company named Breaker, owning iOS and Android apps that offer users a unique approach to podcasts. Its approach allows listeners to like and comment on podcast episodes, fostering community interaction and support. This has set Breaker apart from competitors in the same field operating more like RSS readers.
In his announcement on the Breaker blog, Erik Berlin, co-founder and CEO of Breaker, stated: 'At Breaker, we're passionate about audio communication and we're inspired by the ways Twitter is facilitating public conversations for users worldwide. We're impressed by Twitter's innovative spirit and the new experiences the team is creating.'
Leah Culver, co-founder of Breaker, also confirmed in a tweet that they will develop Twitter Spaces - a new feature on Twitter, providing real-time audio conversations through virtual rooms with other users.
Unfortunately for Breaker users, the iOS and Android apps will cease operations on January 15th. The Breaker team advises podcasters to transfer their podcasts stored on Breaker to other platforms, and users can transfer their podcast subscriptions to other apps using the Export OPML File option.
Certainly, it remains to be seen what Twitter's specific plans will be after acquiring the Breaker podcast service, but perhaps we won't have to wait too long as others, such as Spotify, who intend to acquire the podcast company Megaphone, have already begun building their own podcast ecosystem.
