Official Twitter account verification is set to make a comeback in early 2021
Twitter's new verification policy aims to clarify 'what verification means, who is eligible for account verification, and why some accounts may lose their blue checkmark to ensure a fairer process'. The goal is to create a foundation for future improvements.
According to the draft policy, Twitter will provide a verified blue checkmark for the following account types: government; companies, brands, and non-profit organizations; news; entertainment; sports; and influential individuals, organizers, and other impactful figures. The new policy will also ensure the removal of the verification badge from inactive or incomplete accounts, as well as accounts repeatedly violating Twitter's rules.
The company may also reject verification requests from individuals with multiple violations even if they fall into the eligible account categories for the blue checkmark. In the coming year, Twitter plans to expand the categories and criteria for verification. The feedback period will end on December 8, and Twitter will release the final policy on December 17.
