BBC journalist Dave Lee tweeted that this action aims to reclaim accounts inactive for over 6 months.
As part of its commitment to serving the community communication purpose, Twitter is striving to eliminate inactive accounts to display information more accurately and reliably for all users of this social network. Along with that, they also encourage users to actively log in and use Twitter once they have registered an account, as outlined in their inactive account policy. Twitter has started proactively reaching out to many accounts that have not been logged in for over 6 months to notify them of the permanent deletion of accounts if they remain inactive for a long time.
This means that Twitter-deleted accounts may free up usernames for others to register, but there is no precise timing information available yet. However, Lee mentioned that these usernames may be available on December 11th.
The current policy for inactive accounts on this platform states that users are required to log in and use at least once every 6 months to maintain account activity. Twitter may permanently delete an account if it remains inactive after that time. When deleted, you will have to register, create a new Twitter account.
