Twitter is expanding the ability to record and attach voice memos to tweets. The feature is currently reaching Twitter users on iOS, within a limited user group. Twitter states: 'Sometimes 280 characters aren't enough, and some conversational nuances get lost in translation. Starting today, we're experimenting with a new feature that will add more humanity to how users use Twitter, that's your own voice.'
To access this feature, start composing a tweet and tap on the new wave icon next to the camera icon below the tweet composer window. However, you'll only be allowed to record for a maximum of 140 seconds. Nevertheless, there's a way to create more audio tweets if needed.
Maya Patterson (Product Designer) and Rémy Bourgoin (Software Engineer) at Twitter wrote in a blog post: 'Have more to say? Keep talking. When you reach the time limit for a tweet, a new audio tweet will automatically start generating a thread. Once complete, tap the Done button to finish the recording and return to the tweet composer screen.'
Audio files will be displayed on your timeline with your profile picture as the background image, display mode based on your privacy settings. Tapping on that image will play the recording in a new window at the bottom of the timeline. You can always listen to this tweet even while you scroll or switch to other tasks on your device.
In the coming weeks, Twitter will release this capability to all iOS users along with the option for others to reply to voice tweets. Twitter states that the purpose of this is to 'create a more humane experience for listeners and those who want to share.'
