To type accented characters, press and hold the key until you see the accented characters appear.
To select one of the displayed characters, press the number shown below the character, or click on the character you want to use. If you don't want to type an accented character, enter a different character or press the Esc key.
Additionally, if the additional character for the key you are holding down is not available, the pop-up menu will not appear on the screen. The menu also does not appear when the Key Repeat slider in the Keyboard pane of System Preferences is set to OFF.
Repeating a Character
After typing accented characters, emojis, and symbols on Mac, you may encounter situations where some keys repeat when you press and hold them. Press and hold the Spacebar key or symbol key (hyphen or equal sign) for these characters to repeat in most applications. Applications that do not use accented characters include Calculator, Grapher, or Terminal.
If the character does not repeat, try checking the Keyboard pane in System Preferences to ensure the Key Repeat slider is not set to OFF. If the key is not designed to repeat in the application you are using, copy that character to the clipboard. Then use the Command + V keyboard shortcut to paste the character or word.
