The elusive screen glitch: Reasons behind its stubbornness to change
- Your Windows might still be in trial mode, resulting in a default black screen or retaining the original wallpaper.
- Failure to log in to your Microsoft Windows account (Relevant for Windows 10).
A guide to fixing the unchanging wallpaper issue on Windows 10, 8.1, 8, and Windows 7
Method 1: Resolving the wallpaper freeze using Gpedit.msc tool
Gpedit.msc, also known as the Local Group Policy Editor, serves as a control center for various computer functionalities, including the ability to toggle settings such as wallpaper customization. If you encounter issues, utilize the Local Group Policy Editor to address them.
Step 1: To rectify wallpaper customization issues, begin by pressing Windows + R keys, then input 'gpedit.msc' and press OK to access the Local Group Policy Editor.
Step 2: Within the Local Group Policy Editor, navigate through the following folders sequentially: Local Computer Policy > User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Control Panel > Personalization.
The Personalization section is where adjustments and configurations are made.
Step 3: Within Personalization, locate the option Prevent changing desktop background and double-click to configure this feature.
The Prevent changing desktop background setting determines whether you can alter your computer's wallpaper.
Step 4: Within Prevent changing desktop background, there are 3 values: Not Configured (default), Enabled, and Disabled. Choosing Enabled prevents wallpaper changes, while Disabled allows them. Not Configured is the default value, generally not recommended to select.
To address the wallpaper customization issue, select the Disabled option, then click Apply > OK.
Method 2: Fixing wallpaper issues using regedit
Regedit, short for Registry Editor, similar to Gpedit.msc, provides numerous options for system configuration. However, Registry Editor offers deeper customization and system-level impact. Rest assured, we won't delve too deeply into the system to address wallpaper issues.
Step 1: As before, press Windows + R keys, then type 'regedit' and press OK to confirm access.
Step 2: In Registry Editor, navigate through the following folders: Computer > HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Microsoft > Windows > CurrentVersion > Policies
At Policies, check if there's no folder named ActivateDesktop. If not, create it by clicking on Policies, then selecting New > Key.
Step 3: After creating and naming the folder, you'll find a folder named ActivateDesktop within Policies. We'll proceed to configure this folder.
Step 4: Within ActivateDesktop, click New > DWORD (32-bit), even if you're using a 64-bit Windows.
Note: If your operating system already has this feature, you can skip steps 2, 3, and 4.
Step 5: Next, name this new file NoChangingWallPaper.
Step 6: Double-click on the file and set the Value data to 0, then click OK.
Then proceed to change the computer wallpaper to see if it has been successfully updated.
Method 3: Activate Genuine Windows
Another method is to activate Genuine Windows. The inability to change wallpapers often stems from this issue, particularly common on Windows 10. While other operating systems may still allow changes, they may revert to a black screen after a few minutes.
