AMOLED displays stand out as one of the leading display technologies on smartphones today due to their excellent display quality. So, what exactly is AMOLED? Let's find out to get your answer.
What is AMOLED Display?
AMOLED stands for Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode, which means it's an organic light-emitting diode display technology with an active matrix. Samsung is the manufacturer and also the company that pioneered this display technology.
AMOLED displays are composed of pixels arranged in a Pentile matrix structure (a name given by Samsung for this arrangement type). These pixels are controlled by electric current, allowing them to emit light on their own, resulting in more battery efficiency during screen operation. Each pixel of the AMOLED display can only display one green color and one of the two colors, red or blue. The arrangement order is Red – green – blue – green, different from the standard LCD display order of Red – blue – green. This is why we often hear comments about AMOLED displays having a lot of greenish tint, partly due to the arrangement of these pixel matrices.
Samsung recently introduced a new pixel arrangement on the Galaxy S5 known as the diamond pixel matrix. According to Samsung, this arrangement reduces the size of green pixels and alternates them between red and blue pixels at a 45-degree angle. This method not only reduces the color imbalance issue of AMOLED screens but also ensures each pixel can display all three primary colors similar to traditional LCD screens.

Evaluating AMOLED Display Quality
Advantages of AMOLED Display:
+ AMOLED screens deliver vibrant, eye-catching colors, which is a feature loved by many Samsung users.
+ High brightness and contrast levels ensure deep and rich blacks.
+ AMOLED screens are more power-efficient compared to other display technologies. When displaying black, these screens only need to turn off the pixels at that point, resulting in superior usage time when using shades of gray or black. This is evident in the 'Ultra Power Saving' mode on Samsung's premium phones.
+ Due to its simpler construction, AMOLED screens are thinner than other types of displays. This screen technology is suitable for creating ultra-slim mobile devices.
+ The color range on these screens is wide, and with the color tuning options provided by Samsung on the device, you can easily choose vibrant or subtle colors according to your needs and preferences.
+ Compared to IPS LCD screen technology composed of liquid crystals, AMOLED screens have better impact resistance.
Disadvantages of AMOLED Display
+ When it comes to maximum brightness, IPS LCD screens are leading with technologies capable of reaching over 800 nits. Therefore, AMOLED displays have certain limitations in outdoor visibility.
Which smartphones feature AMOLED displays?
When it comes to AMOLED technology, Samsung immediately comes to mind as the leading developer of this type of display. It's estimated that AMOLED displays will hold around 37.5% market share in 2015.
Currently, most smartphones from Samsung are equipped with AMOLED displays, including flagship models like the Galaxy S8, Galaxy S9, and Galaxy Note 8.
