The uni knot, also known as the Grinner knot, is a fundamental and reliable fishing knot. It’s quite easy to tie and requires only fishing line and a hook or swivel with an eye. To connect two fishing lines together, you can utilize a double uni knot. But fret not, tying a double uni knot isn't too complicated; you simply perform the knot-tying process twice!
Steps
Creating a Uni Knot
Pass 6 inches (15 cm) of line through the eye of the hook or swivel. Feed the fishing line through the eye of the hook or swivel, then fold it over the eye so that the tag (short) end runs alongside the main (long) line for at least 6 inches (15 cm).
Form a loop with the tag end over the lines. Keep the lines doubled, then bring the tag end back up and over the two lines to form a small loop on one side.
Weave the tag end through the loop and wrap it around the lines 5-6 times.
Ensure that you're wrapping the tag end around both lines, excluding the loop.
Secure the coils by pulling the tag end. Place one hand near the hook's eye and the other on the tag end. Dampening the line's end can enhance grip while tightening the coils.
- Apply a bit of lip balm to keep the lines moist.
Shift the coils towards the hook's eye. Grasp the main line with one hand and pull down, while using the other hand to shift the coils towards the eye, ensuring a snug knot to the hook or swivel.
Trim any excess line. Use a knife or scissors to neatly cut off any surplus from the tag end.
Using the Double Uni Knot Technique
Overlap the ends of two lines by 6 inches (15 cm). Select two lines of equal diameter. Align them so they run parallel, with the tag (short) ends facing opposite directions.
Create a loop with each tag end over the lines. Fold one tag end back over itself and across the two lines to form a loop. Repeat the process with the other tag end.
- Apply lip balm to moisten the lines for better grip.
Wrap one tag end around both lines six times. Take one of the tag ends (you can start with either side) and wrap it around the loop and both lines six times. Keep the loop open.
Insert the same tag end through the loop and pull it tight. Thread the tag end of the same line you used to wrap around the lines through the loop. Pull the tag end firmly to tighten the coils.
Repeat the same procedure with the opposite tag end. Wrap the other tag end around both lines six times. Thread the tag end through the loop and tighten it.
Pull each main line in opposite directions and trim any excess line. To snugly secure the two knots together, grasp one main line in each hand and gently pull in opposite directions. Then, use scissors or a knife to cut off any extra line from the tag ends.
