Unlocking Characters in Risk of Rain

Each character in Risk of Rain comes with 4 skills and various stats. Among them, the Commando is the character available when players start the game.

How to Unlock Characters in Risk of Rain

1. Unlock Enforcer

To unlock the Enforcer character, players must complete the task of defeating Magma Worm, Wandering Vagrant, and Colossus.

Enforcer comes equipped with weapons and skills:

- Riot Shotgun: a short-range gun with 160% damage.
- Shield Slam: dealing 210% damage.
- Skill: a defensive ability that increases attack speed.
- Crowd Control Skill: uses grenades to cause a wide-range stun, 250% damage.

2. Unlock Bandit

To unlock Bandit, players need to reach level 3.

Bandit's abilities:

- Blast: uses a slug to deal 150% damage.
- Toss TNT: throws a curved grenade inflicting 230% damage.
- Smoke Bomb: activates after 3 seconds or when another skill is used, surprising enemies and dealing 140% damage.
- Lights Out: targets an enemy's head, causing 600% damage. If the enemy is defeated, Bandit's skill cooldown resets to 0.

3. Unlocking Huntress

Huntress character unlocks after players defeat a total of 15 creatures.

Huntress's abilities:

- Strafe: shoots arrows dealing 140% damage.
- Laser Glaive: throws a glaive to damage enemies (up to 4 enemies) with 300% damage.
- Blink: teleports forward at a slow movement speed.
- Cluster Bomb: fires an explosive arrow dealing 320% damage. This arrow releases cluster bombs that explode with a size of 6 x 80%.

4. Unlocking HAN-D

To unlock HAN-D character in Risk of Rain, players must locate the Robot Janitor inside a container in area 2 of the final level.

HAN-D's abilities:

- HURT: arms itself for combat, dealing 180% damage.
- DRONE: deploys an unmanned aerial vehicle dealing 190% damage, also capable of self-healing.
- OVERCLOCK: increases attack speed and disorients enemies by an additional 30%.
- FORCED-REASSEMBLY: applies a high-damage weapon with up to 400% damage.

5. Unlocking Engineer

To unlock the Engineer character, players need to purchase a total of 40 unmanned aerial vehicles.

Engineer's abilities:

- Tri-nade: launches 3 grenades with 3 x 80% damage.
- Bounding Mine: releases an explosive trap with 300% damage.
- Thermal Harpoons: fires 4 rockets with 4 x 250% damage.
- Auto-Turret: deploys legal turrets (up to 2) with 3x100% damage for 30 seconds.

6. Unlocking Miner

To unlock the Miner character, defeat the Direseeker monster in the underground, located at the bottom-right corner of the Magma Barracks.

Miner comes with the following abilities:

- Crush: 'crush' nearby enemies to deal 140% damage.
- Drill Charge: charges for 2 seconds, dashes through enemies dealing up to 600% damage.
- Backblast: shoots backward to deal 200% damage to enemies.
- To The Stars: leaps into the air and descends, hitting all enemies with 3 x 180% damage.

7. Unlocking Sniper

Unlocking the Sniper character is quite straightforward, just surpass level 1 in the game.

Sniper's skills include:

- Snipe / Reload: shoots enemies dealing 250% damage. Activating reload enhances damage.
- Steady Aim: carefully aims at targets, increasing damage when the button is held longer. Bullets fired can deal up to 2000% damage.
- Military Training: flips backward over a long distance.
- Spotter: SCAN / RETURN: deploys Spotter to analyze the most dangerous enemies, increasing the chance of attack by 1005.

8. Unlocking Acrid

To unlock the Acrid character in Risk of Rain, players need to ascend to the upper-right of the Sunken Tomb, open the cage, and defeat the creature inside.

Acrid's abilities include:

- Festering Wounds: lashes at enemies, dealing 120% damage. Targets are poisoned with 24% damage per second.
- Neurotoxin: spits toxic saliva dealing 220% damage, causing enemies to be stunned for 1 second.
- Caustic Sludge: secretes poisonous sludge for 2 seconds, dealing 90% damage to enemies.
- Epidemic: spreads a deadly disease, poisoning enemies with 100% damage per second.

9. Unlocking Mercenary

Complete 5 game levels to unlock the Mercenary character.

Mercenary comes with the following skills:

- Laser Sword: deals damage to 3 different enemies with 130% damage.
- Whirlwind: inflicts 2 x 80% damage to all surrounding enemies.
- Blinding Assault: blinds enemies with 120% damage.
- Eviscerate: targets the nearest enemy and attacks with 6 x 110% damage.

10. Unlocking Loader

Collect a variety of 30 different items in battle to unlock the Loader character.

Loader possesses the following skills:

- Knuckleboom: defeats nearby enemies with 120% damage. The third strike deals 240% damage.
- Debris Shield: maintains 100% health for 3 seconds, simultaneously increasing movement speed.
- Hydraulic Gauntlet: stuns and damages enemies with 210% damage.
- M440 Conduit: places a lightning rod, dealing 80% damage per second for 9 seconds.

11. Unlocking CHEF

To unlock CHEF, players must find the items Sprouting Egg, Foreign Fruit, Bustling Fungus, and Bitter Root in a single playthrough.

CHEF comes equipped with the following skills:

- Dice: tosses knives towards enemies, dealing 100% damage.
- Sear: inflicts 260% damage to enemies.
- Glaze: stuns and deals +78% damage to enemies.
- Second Helping: heals and enhances strength in the next battle.
