Facebook and Facebook Messenger form a popular duo on iOS and Android devices as widely favored communication tools in our country. Facebook helps you connect with thousands of friends everywhere, while Messenger allows us to chat with specific individuals or groups. After some time using Facebook and Facebook Messenger, I have a few tricks to share with you. Hopefully, they will make your use of Facebook more convenient and enjoyable.
1. Save Favorite Content
This is a new feature added to Facebook. While browsing the News Feed, if someone shares something interesting, like a link to a song on Zing/NhacCuaTui, a YouTube video, a restaurant, an entertainment venue, a movie theater, etc., you can save it. Later, when needed, you can access them quickly without having to search through your friends' Timeline.
To save a piece of content, you have two options:
- If the content is displayed on the News Feed: you will see a bookmark icon, click on it to save.
- If the content is not displayed on the News Feed: at this point, you need to click on the small arrow in the top right corner of each post, select 'Save...'
To access saved items, tap the Menu button (three horizontal lines icon) > Scroll down and select Apps > See All > Saved. Here, you will find all content in one interface or view saved content by different types such as locations, music, TV shows, website links, and more.
2. Edit Your Posts or Comments
If you've made a spelling mistake, tagged the wrong person, or provided incorrect information, don't worry. Right from the Facebook app on Android and iOS, you can quickly edit your posts or comments.
For posts:
- Go to your own Timeline (Menu button > your name)
- Find the post you want to edit
- Click the small arrow button at the top of the post
- Select 'Edit Post'
- Edit the content and click 'Save' when done
For comments:
- Long-press on your comment
- Select “Edit”
- Type in the new content
- Press “Update” when adjustments are done
3. Explore Suggestions for Potential Connections
This is a fascinating feature on Facebook, as you can discover people that Facebook thinks you might know but haven't added as friends yet. I've rediscovered some old friends this way; who knows, you might too?
How to do it:
- Click on “Friend Request”
- Scroll down past “Friend Requests”
- You will find suggestions under “People You May Know”
4. Explore Nearby Places
This feature is both fun and useful, helping you discover what recreational places are around you, what the stores are like, and which of your friends have visited them. On a weekend with no plans, you can use it to choose a destination, quite interesting. Using the location feature is straightforward: Press the Menu button > 'Nearby Places' (or you can check the Check-In option at the bottom of the app).
5. Hide Unwanted Posts
If you come across a post in your News Feed that you find annoying, you can hide it so you won't see it again, such as posts with offensive language or inappropriate images. To do this, click on the small arrow icon in the top right corner of the post, then select “I don't want to see this”.
6. Manage Notification Contents on Mobile
While on a computer, we might want to see all notifications sent out by Facebook. However, constant buzzing and ringing on a phone may not be ideal, especially when you're at work, in class, or having a meal with friends. Therefore, you can reduce some unwanted notifications on your smartphone by:
- Tap on the Menu button >Account Settings (on iOS, it's Menu >Settings)
- Select Notifications (on iOS, Notifications >Push)
- Uncheck the content you don't want to be notified on your phone
- Press the Back button to finish.
- Press the Menu button >Account Settings (on iOS, it's Menu >Settings)
- Select Notifications (on iOS, Notifications >Push)
- Uncheck the content you don't want to be notified on your phone
- Press the Back button to finish.
7. Filter News Feed by Friend Groups
By default, the News Feed displays posts that Facebook thinks you're interested in or most relevant to you. However, there are times when you only want to see posts from close friends or from accounts belonging to a specific group. To do this, follow these steps:
- Tap on the Menu button
- On Android, look for “Menu” > press “See All'
- On iOS, find and tap on “Data Source”
- Here, you can select groups to exclusively view posts from people in those groups
8. Disable Chat Heads (Android)
Chat Heads is a Facebook Messenger chat feature that allows us to chat anytime, anywhere without running the Messenger app. Even while browsing the web, reading a book, or responding to emails, you can still chat. However, not everyone likes this feature; some find it distracting to have a popping circle notification on the screen. To turn it off on your Android device, do the following:
- Run the Facebook Messenger app (not Facebook)
- Tap on the Settings icon (gear icon)
- Tap on the “Chat Head” line
- Slide the toggle switch at the top of the screen to “Off'
9. Search for Images and Attach to Conversations (Android)
Right from the chat interface with friends, you can quickly search for an image using Bing and send it to your friends. This way, you'll save a lot of time compared to the traditional method of exiting the Messenger app, running a browser, searching and saving the image, and then attaching it. Perform the following steps:
- In the chat box, press the Menu button > “Search for Images”
- Enter keywords to search
- Select desired images
- The images will be sent to your friends immediately
10. View the Location of Your Chat (iOS)
If your chat partner shares their location, you can easily find out where they are. This feature is useful when you need to go to the same place as your chat buddy, for example, when planning a hangout. Here's how to do it:
- Run Facebook Messenger > select the desired conversation
- Tap on any chat line
- If the other person has shared their location, a map will appear
- Select the map, and Google Maps or Apple Maps will open, showing the exact location of your friend
- Then you can set directions if needed

From the tips shared above, you'll undoubtedly find the chat and messaging features on Facebook more useful and convenient than browsing on a computer web browser. Although these are small tips, they will help you manage and use Facebook much better.
