Described as a fusion of Iron Man and Venom in the DC universe, Blue Beetle boasts a unique symbiotic armor.
Recently, DC Studios released the first official trailer for Blue Beetle - one of the final films in the expanding DC Extended Universe (DCEU), and a superhero project slated for 2023 by Warner Bros. Developed since 2018, Blue Beetle will delve into the backstory and origin of the superhero Jaime Reyes, who possesses the most cutting-edge extraterrestrial armor in DC.
Blue Beetle hits theaters on August 18th this year. The film has garnered attention for its release during the transition period of the DC cinematic universe, as the DCEU makes way for the DCU. This raises questions about whether Blue Beetle, along with other superheroes, will find their place in James Gunn and Peter Safran's new universe.
Regardless of Blue Beetle's future, here's everything audiences need to know about DC's latest superhero.
The Origin Story of Blue Beetle Jaime Reyes in DC Comics

Unveiling the Origin Story of Jaime Reyes in the Original Tale: A Simple Yet Captivating Narrative
The Scarab, once the prized possession of the previous Blue Beetle superhero, finds its way to El Paso, Reyes' hometown, amidst a sequence involving Shazam, Maxwell Lord, and Spectre.
On his first night at Reyes' residence, the Scarab unexpectedly springs to life, bonding itself to Reyes' spine. This fortuitous event marks Reyes as its new host, granting him the state-of-the-art, cutting-edge armor of DC.
The Scarab's multidimensional powers prove challenging for Reyes to control, leading to his unintentional disappearance for a year. Upon his return, Reyes reveals his newfound identity as Blue Beetle, embarking on a superhero journey collaborating with renowned teams like the Teen Titans and even the Justice League.
The Might of Blue Beetle in the Original Comic

Despite his ordinary origins, the Scarab bestows upon Reyes an array of superhuman abilities rivaling any other superhero. It furnishes Reyes with an incredibly durable exoskeleton and a symbiotic relationship. While Reyes mostly commands Blue Beetle's powers, there are instances where the Scarab asserts control, as depicted in the recently unveiled trailer.
Similar to other superheroes, Blue Beetle possesses a set of physical skills like super speed, super strength, enhanced endurance, along with the flexibility of flight. Moreover, this scarab also bestows upon its host various superpowers, such as self-healing, energy absorption, or the creation of an absolute defense system against potential threats from the surrounding environment.
Furthermore, as showcased in the trailer, the armor has the ability to materialize any weapon that Reyes can imagine. From swords, axes, maces, shields to even modern plasma guns, the scarab can manifest them instantly. Lastly, it also brings forth many supernatural abilities such as fire manipulation, sound control, creating scanning devices, drones, or even technology manipulation.
Who Will Portray Blue Beetle/Jaime Reyes?

Xolo Mariduena will step into the role of the upcoming blockbuster's superhero, Blue Beetle. The actor is best known for his portrayal of Miguel Diaz in Cobra Kai - a role he has been dedicated to since 2018. With a heritage spanning Mexico, Cuba, and Ecuador, born and raised in California, Mariduena is deemed highly suitable for Blue Beetle, the first Latin superhero on the big screen in the DCEU.
Sharing with Variety, the actor said: 'I feel both excited and nervous, genuinely thrilled. It's that feeling when you know you're stepping into a project with tremendous potential, yet you feel comfortable and close to the cast and crew. I'm eagerly looking forward to everyone enjoying the first superhero film with a Latin lead'.
All About the Announced Details of DC's Blue Beetle Film Project

Blue Beetle will be helmed by director Angel Manuel Soto, a filmmaker hailing from Puerto Rico. Manuel Soto gained prominence after leading the HBO Max project Charm City Kings and received much acclaim from the industry. Meanwhile, the screenplay for Blue Beetle is crafted by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer. This duo officially took on the task of developing DC's superhero project in 2021, as part of the plan to release the film on HBO Max. By the end of 2021, after Mariduena was cast in the lead role, Warner Bros. decided to shift strategy and premiere Blue Beetle outside theaters.
Additionally, the film features Bruna Marquezine as Penny, Jaime Reyes' 'muse'; Belissa Escobedo as Reyes' sister, and George Lopez as the superhero's uncle. The main antagonists of the film are Victoria Kord and Carapax the Indestructible Man, portrayed by Susan Sarandon and Raoul Trujillo respectively. Victoria Kord is a character created specifically for this project, but may still have connections to other DC comic superheroes, such as Blue Beetle predecessor Ted Kord.
As planned, Blue Beetle is set to debut on August 18th this year.
Will Blue Beetle become part of James Gunn's new DC Universe?

Similar to other projects like The Flash or Aquaman: The Lost Kingdom, the fate of Blue Beetle post-DCEU closure remains uncertain. Starting from 2023, James Gunn will officially kickstart the DC Universe, with new faces, new storylines, and likely no connection to the previous DCEU. Even familiar superheroes like Superman or Batman will be portrayed by different actors.
However, James Gunn has expressed optimism about Blue Beetle, hinting at the possibility of this superhero joining the DC Universe in the future. According to reports from The Guardians, the talented director stated: 'We have Shazam, leading into Flash - a project that will reboot everything, and then comes Blue Beetle, a work with no prior connection. He (Jaime Reyes) could very well be a part of the DC Universe'.
According to James Gunn's statement, it can be tentatively affirmed that Blue Beetle will be a truly standalone film with no connections to other superheroes, even as cameos. Unlike Shazam! Fury of the Gods featuring Gal Gadot, or The Flash with at least 2 versions of Batman, Blue Beetle will have a smaller scale, more detached from DC's overarching narrative. This allows Jame Reyes to potentially become a part of the DC Universe in the future, if the film achieves good box office revenue.
