In our previous guide, we showed you how to revamp the default background color in Illustrator. Now, let's delve into Mytour's comprehensive walkthrough on mastering the Shape Builder Tool in Illustrator.
Mastering Illustrator's Shape Builder Tool Made Easy
Unleash Creativity with Illustrator's Shape Builder Tool, enabling users to craft intricate objects by merging and deleting simple shapes, selecting edges and areas for new objects. Additionally, users can break overlapping objects to form new ones.
The style attributes of the object are inherited post-merge. While the Shape Builder Tool defaults to Merge mode, users can seamlessly switch to Erase mode by utilizing the Alt key (Windows) or Option key (Mac).
1. Creating an Object with Shape Builder Tool
Step 1: Click on the Selection tool in the Tools panel, then select the paths you wish to merge to form a single, unique shape.
Step 2: Select the Shape Builder tool from the toolbar. Merge mode is the default selection.
Step 3: To break or extract a region from an object or shape, click on the selected area.
Step 4: To merge paths, drag paths along the area. Merged areas will form a new shape. Attributes from the area are applied to merged shapes.
When two areas are merged, a new shape is formed. Attributes from the area are applied to merged shapes.
Pro Tip: Press and hold Shift key while dragging across paths to reveal the shape area and quickly merge multiple paths.
Step 5: To delete paths, press Alt (on Windows) or Option (on Mac) and click on the enclosed region or edge you want to delete.
2. Setting up Shape Builder Tool Options
Step 1: Double-click on the Shape Builder tool in the Tools panel.
Step 2: To detect and display spacing between objects, tick the Gap Detection box, then choose Gap Length as Small (3 points), Medium (6 points), or Large (12 points), or tick the Custom box and customize the length of the points.
Note: Ensure the gap length values closely match the actual gap lengths, otherwise Illustrator may not detect them.
Step 3: Customize Options and Highlights:
- Consider Open Filled Path as Closed: Option to create an invisible edge for open paths to form an area.
- In Merge Mode, Clicking Stroke Splits the Path: Choose this option to split the parent path into two, the first edge being where you click to specify the split position.
- Pick Color From: Select Color Swatches or Artwork as the source color strip for objects. If choosing Color Swatches, remember to check the Cursor Swatch Preview box for a preview and selection of colors.
- Fill: Choose to highlight merged areas with gray color or hover over selected paths.
- Highlight Stroke When Editable: Highlight strokes with the color you have selected.
Step 4: Click OK.
