Activating Location History on Google Maps
Google Maps crafts your timeline by tracing your movements and stays. Dive into your timeline by enabling Location History.
Step 1: Go to the Google Account page at https://myaccount.google.com/. Log in to the account you use with Google Maps.
Step 2: Click on Privacy & Data in the horizontal menu (on mobile) or the left menu (on desktop).
Step 3: Scroll down until you find Location History >> Location History. If this feature isn't enabled, click on it.
Step 4: Select Enable.
Additionally, you may want to adjust the Auto-delete settings to have tracking data erased after a certain period.
How to view Timeline, your route history on Google Maps (phone)
Step 1: Open Google Maps on your iPhone or Android phone. Tap on your Profile picture in the top right corner.
Step 2: Select Your Timeline.
The screen will change, and several options will appear in the top horizontal menu. The choices might vary slightly depending on whether you're using an iPhone or Android.
You'll see the following tabs:
- Date: Here, you can view all the places you've visited in a day. It also indicates how you got there (train, car, motorcycle, etc.), and the time you spent at each location.
- Trips: Displays trips, whether for leisure or business, with arrival and departure dates.
- Details: Tracks the time you spent walking, driving, and using public transportation each month.
- Places: This section shows restaurants, tourist spots, stores, hotels you've visited. They're organized into different categories, and you can press the button at the bottom to view the full list.
- City: Lists the towns and cities you've been to, along with the timeframes. Continue tapping on a city name to see where you've been within that city and how often.
- World: Lists all the countries you've visited. Click on a country to see which cities you've been to within that country.
How to view Timeline, your route history on Google Maps (computer)
You can also view the Timeline on the web, but the interface will be slightly different.
Step 1: Open Google Maps on your computer and click on the 3 horizontal lines in the top left corner.
Step 2: Select Your Timeline from the menu that appears.
You've been taken to the Timeline page, where you can:
- Select a date at the top left to view your movement history for that day.
- Choose the red Places tab at the bottom left to see all the shops, tourist spots, favorite places you've visited.
- Click on the Other trips box to view other trips, business trips you've taken.
- You can also Click on a red dot on the map to see the exact date you visited that point.
If you've clicked on a feature and want to return to the main Timeline page, click on the Timeline button in the top left corner.
