Many individuals worry about losing out when dining at buffets due to eating too little, but with these 8 savvy tips, buffet dining becomes a breeze.
I'm Alex, a customer service representative at Heavenly Oasis Resort, nestled in the serene An Khanh district. Despite not having a hearty appetite and being a bit picky, I rarely indulge in buffet dining. Last weekend, however, after receiving an invitation from a group of old friends, one of whom happens to be a culinary expert, to dine at BBQ Garden, perusing a menu boasting 200 dishes was overwhelming.
But my friend shared a few simple yet remarkably effective tips, making the experience a success. In essence, he outlined 8 practical pointers to ensure you make the most of your buffet dining experience without spending a penny unnecessarily.
Exploring BBQ Garden: A Close Encounter with Culinary Delights
1. Never Dine Alone at a Buffet
Buffets are a celebration of flavors with an array of dishes. They're not suited for hurried diners or those who leave before the feast gets hot. So, if you have a leisurely 3 to 4 hours to spare, opt for a buffet. Also, avoid dining alone; as the saying goes, 'It's not about what you eat, but who you eat with.'

Never dine solo at a buffet or if you only have 1 to 2 hours
2. Make Advance Reservations
Choosing a table neither too close nor too far from the center ensures you're neither too lazy nor too diligent in fetching food. Being lazy leads to eating less, while being too diligent results in quick satiation and missing out on tasting a variety of dishes. Additionally, many buffet restaurants fill up quickly, so if you plan to dine out, booking in advance is essential. Better safe than sorry!
3. Explore Before You Indulge
Upon arrival, resist the urge to dive straight into your favorite dishes. Instead, take a leisurely stroll around to assess which dishes to prioritize attacking and which ones to skip for a more efficient dining experience.
4. Appetizers
At BBQ Garden, there's quite a variety of appetizers. First up is soup: the sweet and light young corn chicken soup, and the creamy chicken mushroom soup with tender chicken and crispy mushrooms, both delicious. Personally, I prefer the chicken soup, so I only sampled these two.
When having soup, avoid those with overly sweet or sugary flavors, like pumpkin soup, as my friend mentioned.
Similarly, there's usually a salad bar. BBQ Garden offers nearly a dozen salad options, but it's best to avoid those with excessive mayonnaise and cheese as they can be overwhelming. Opting for fresh greens with a hint of acidity will awaken your taste buds and prepare your palate for a wider array of dishes.

Start with Soup

Then Move on to Salad
Spring rolls or fresh rolls are also in this phase. If you're a meat lover like me, trying a couple of shrimp and meat spring rolls or pho rolls won't leave you feeling any fuller.

Salads can also be consumed during this time
5. Main Course
Now onto the main event, the main course. At BBQ Garden, the main course consists of a trio of fried, grilled, and hotpot dishes (this is why I scoped things out beforehand to understand the enemy's position, as they say, knowing your enemy is half the battle – this was the most interesting advice from my friend that I've been asking for).
Start with dry dishes before moving on to wet ones, so I headed straight for the grilling station. There are plenty of dishes here that you won't find at home, like black pepper-marinated chicken, five-spice chicken wings, T-bone beef with sauce, spare ribs with spicy sauce, Sichuan-marinated pork... Occasionally, accompany grilled dishes with a bit of salad, not only to combat greasiness but also to add a hint of tanginess for easier digestion and enhanced flavor as you continue your culinary journey.

The grilling station offers a variety of delicious grilled meats, don't let them overwhelm you, just sample each one a little

Next up is my favorite part, seafood. This is entirely up to your preference. I went all out with two grilled oysters with scallion oil because they looked incredibly tempting. The oysters weren't fishy, with thick, sweet meat blending perfectly with the aromatic scallion oil. After that, I indulged in squid, clams, a few grilled scallops, and even managed to fit in two grilled mantis shrimps.

Once satisfied with the seafood, you move on to the soups. If there's hotpot available, indulge in that, or opt for other soup dishes like stews or noodle soups at this point.
6. Desserts
This is the final step. BBQ Garden offers ice cream, sweet soups, caramel, and fruits. I was advised to start with ice cream and the sweetest desserts (cakes, caramel, etc.) should be saved for last.
The ice cream here isn't overly sweet, so you can still enjoy a bowl of sweet soup afterward. While there's no yogurt available, finishing with caramel would also be a sensible choice.

7. Beverage Choices
It's recommended to opt for smoothies or plain water instead of carbonated drinks like Coca-Cola or Pepsi. These drinks can lead to a feeling of quick fullness and are not good for the stomach.
8. Other Considerations:
+ 'Chew thoroughly and enjoy', eat slowly while chatting with friends to allow the stomach to work gradually and not be overloaded quickly.
+ Don't hesitate to move around to select food, take no more than two plates at a time, a small quantity will prevent you from feeling full too quickly, moreover, moving around will allow your stomach to function at its best. + Limit fried and deep-fried foods, as they often give a false sense of being full and unable to eat more, but once at home, you'll surely feel hungry again.
A bit much, but after directly practicing, these small tips become incredibly easy to remember. I didn't manage to try all 200 dishes but tasted about 60% for the first time, spent up to 3.5 hours at BBQ Garden - A remarkable success for a picky eater venturing into buffet dining for the second time.
By the way, BBQ Garden is currently offering up to 34% off until the end of the month. You can try out the nearly 200-dish buffet that I conquered here.
