To activate your Windows 10 license, you can use either a product key or your Microsoft account, where your digital license is stored.
1. Activating Windows 10 with a Product Key
1.1. Entering the Key Before Installing Windows 10
Step 1: In the Windows setup screen, simply press Next to continue.
Step 2: Click Install now to proceed with the installation.
Step 3: Enter your license key (1) into the designated field => Next (2). Then proceed with the standard Windows installation steps.
Step 4: If your license key is valid, Windows will automatically activate after installation. To verify your Windows license, follow the guide on How to Check if Your Windows 10 is Genuine.
1.2. Adding a license key after Windows 10 installation
Step 1: Navigate to Start (1) => Settings (2).
Step 2: Select the Update & Security option.
Step 3: Choose Activation (1) => Change product key (2).
Step 4: Enter your license key (1) => Next (2).
Next, click Activate.
After successful activation, you will see the license status Windows is activated.
1.3. Activating via CMD
Step 1: Open cmd by clicking on Search (1) or using the Windows + S key combination => search with the keyword cmd (2) => Run as administrator (3).
Step 2: Enter the following command and press Enter.
slmgr /ipk XXXX
Where XXXX is your license key.
You will see a notification indicating successful key installation. Press OK to continue.
Step 3: Enter the next command.
slmgr /skms kms8.msguides.com
Click OK on the appearing notification to proceed.
Important Note: Microsoft accounts holding digital licenses are tightly linked to your computer, storing hardware information. Thus, if you upgrade your computer hardware, this method becomes invalid.
Step 1: Navigate to Start (1) => Settings (2).
Step 2: Opt for the Accounts section.
Step 3: Access Your info (1) => Sign in with a Microsoft account instead (2).
Step 4: Log in to your Microsoft account (1) => Next (2).
After successfully logging in to your account, Windows 10 will automatically activate the saved digital license. You can check this in the Settings => Updates & Security => Activation section.
