Not the typical white or green hues you often see, Lake Hillier's alluring pink shade stands out for its rare beauty.
Lake Hillier is a pink-colored lake situated on Middle Island, the largest island in the Recherche Archipelago, Western Australia. When viewed from above, Lake Hillier resembles an inflated bubblegum bubble, making it exceptionally unique.

The lake stretches about 600 meters and is surrounded by a strip of sand and a dense Paperbark and Eucalyptus forest. A narrow strip of sand covered with vegetation separates the lake from the southern sea.

Unlike other pink lakes worldwide, such as the one in Retba and the salt lake in San Francisco Bay, scientists have yet to determine the source of Lake Hillier's pink color. However, many scientists speculate that the pink color is created by microorganisms like Dunaliella salina and Halobacteria. Another hypothesis suggests a red-colored bacteria species in the salt crust is responsible. This color is not a result of sunlight, as a water sample from the lake retains its pink hue even when moved to a different location.

Aside from a few years of salt mining by locals, the island and its pink lake remain nearly untouched. The pink lake offers tourists an exceptional sight, a marvel of the world's natural wonders.
Beyond Hillier, the world boasts several uniquely pink lakes such as Retba Lake (also known as Lac Rose) located in the northern part of the Cap Vert Peninsula, northeast of the Dakar capital in Senegal. Salina de Torrevieja and La Salina de La Mata are two salt lakes surrounding Torrevieja, a coastal city in Southeast Spain. Dusty Rose Lake in British Columbia, Canada, exhibits peculiar characteristics. Despite the absence of salt or algae, the water still takes on a pink hue. Masazirgol (also known as Masazir Lake) is a salt lake in the Qaradag region near Baku, Azerbaijan.
