Indians believe that allowing cattle to tread on them during the Diwali festival brings good luck throughout the year.
Unusual Tradition of Cattle Treading for Luck in India
This unique and eccentric tradition occurs in the village of Bhidavad, Madhya Pradesh, India. On the morning after the Diwali festival, which this year falls on 12/11, locals lie down for the cattle to pass over. These cows participate in a prior worship ceremony by the villagers. It is believed that 330 million deities reside in these cattle, so those tread upon are bestowed with blessings from the gods.

Participants in this tradition must adhere to another strict ritual: fasting for 5 days, and staying overnight at the village temple on the day before Diwali.
On the second day of Diwali, after performing a ceremony honoring the deities, villagers beat drums and parade around the village. During this time, the village's cattle are gathered in one place. People begin to lie down, the animals are released, and they tread upon those lying down as they move along.

As the herd of cattle passes, devotees rise, dancing to the beat of drums, creating a lively atmosphere throughout the village. Residents from nearby villages and tourists also visit to witness this tradition. They cheer and enthusiastically support the festivities.
Many express concerns about safety when allowing cattle to tread on people. However, until now, no followers have suffered serious injuries, as affirmed by individuals from India.
