1. Prerequisites:
- Mac computer: running OS X 10.10 Yosemite or later, models from 2012 onwards.
- Mobile device: updated to iOS 8, specific apps like Pages, Keynote, Numbers updated to the latest version as of 17/10, with an iCloud account logged in across all desired devices for Handoff functionality.
2. Configuring Handoff Settings.
This step only needs to be done once.
- On Mac: Navigate to Settings > System Preferences > General > select 'Allow Handoff between this Mac and your iCloud devices'
- On iOS device: Go to Settings > General > Handoff & Suggested Apps > enable Handoff.
All devices must be on the same Wi-Fi network or use Wi-Fi hotspot and ensure Bluetooth is turned on.
3. Utilizing Handoff.
Three scenarios may unfold as follows:
A. Continuing interrupted work on a computer and continuing on a mobile device.
You're using an application or file on OS X, to use it on your mobile iOS device, follow these steps:
- Open the Notes app on your Mac, try opening any note and editing it
- At the bottom left corner of the mobile device, you'll see a small grayed-out Notes app icon. When you open another app on your Mac, this icon will immediately change accordingly.
- Tap on that small grayed-out Notes icon, drag it up or double-tap the Home button to access the multitasking interface on your iOS device, swipe the leftmost app, which is the software currently open in Handoff mode
- Notes on iOS will launch and load the exact note you were working on.
B. Working on an iOS device and switching to Mac to continue
- On iOS, launch the Keynote (or Pages, Numbers) app.
- Open any file.
- Immediately, on the top left of the Mac's dock, a Keynote icon will appear, featuring a small phone icon.
- Tap on that icon to run Keynote on OS X, the app will immediately run and open at the exact spot where you left off in the same file.
C. Switching between mobile devices
The process is similar to case A, but now the app you're running is on the iOS platform.
4. Troubleshooting when Handoff isn't working
- Have you followed the requirements above correctly?
- Restart your device if you've followed the requirements correctly but it's still not working.
- If it still doesn't work, here's what we do:
+ On your iOS device, go to Settings > General > Handoff & Suggested Apps
+ Turn off the Handoff switch and then turn it back on
+ Go back to Settings > FaceTime > iPhone Cellular Calls, turn off this option, then turn it back on
+ Restart your iPhone or iPad
