The Formation History of Sensoji Temple
Legend has it that in the year 628, while two brothers Hinokuma Takenari and Hinokuma Hamanari were fishing on the Sumida River, they found a statue of Bodhisattva Kannon entangled in their net. They tried many ways to return the statue to the river, but all attempts were unsuccessful.
Recognizing the sacredness of the statue, the two brothers from the Hinokuma family presented their findings to the village headman Hajino Nakamoto, proposing to establish a small temple dedicated to Bodhisattva Kannon to allow villagers the opportunity to worship. For this reason, Sensoji Temple has been preserved until today.
