Have you ever pondered over the fact that despite a year of hard work, the coveted salary raise from your company is yet to materialize? This article holds the key to unraveling this question, shedding light on the reasons behind the delayed salary hike from your boss.
A decade ago, there was a booming trend in raising parakeets, with prices soaring to several million. Even the ones suitable for pets were priced at around 700 – 800K.
I have a brother who is a seasoned bird breeder, and his intriguing business approach adds a unique flair. He acquires parakeets for release, usually buying a few thousand at a time and setting them free in a large aviary. All of them indulge in a comfortable diet of quality bird feed...
Why should the boss consider a salary raise for you?
My older brother spends his entire lunchtime sipping tea and listening to hundreds of singing birds. The skill lies in recognizing which bird is singing what.
In a cage full of birds, if lucky, about 10 make it through the 'qualifying round,' singled out and moved to a different cage. The premium treatment involves feeding them a mixture of green bean paste and egg yolk, providing them with extra energy, making them sing better, and keeping them healthier with more beautiful feathers...
The rest, my brother releases them all. (Interestingly, these ones don't even want to fly away; they just fly to the trees inside the house. This forces my brother to set up a large plate of bran on the tree for them to eat).
Those that 'make it to the next round' are further observed by my brother for a few more lunchtimes. If fortunate, 1-2 are selected as 'stars,' separated into individual cages and fed live worms, the finest delicacy for birds. These individuals can fetch prices ranging from 700,000 to 1 million or more.
After work, contemplating on personnel development isn't much different from raising these advising birds. Fresh graduates are abundant, paid with bird feed, so to speak.
Among them, a few standout 'candidates' are promoted with a salary increase equivalent to the mixture of green bean paste and egg yolk. Then, those with genuine capabilities will be further promoted, given their own workspace (individual cage), and enjoy a salary as delightful as 'live worms'...
I asked my brother why not feed all few hundred with the 'green bean paste and egg yolk' salary to foster good development. Who knows, many talented ones might have the chance to shine.
My brother mentioned that he might miss a few talented ones who haven't had the chance to showcase their skills, but where would he get so much food for them...
It's similar to not being able to raise the salary for the entire workforce. Only those who seize the opportunity to prove themselves will earn the chance for a salary increase.
Demonstrate your value, and everything will come to you naturally.
When we go to work, it's not much different from the birds in the cage. Only those who stand out have the chance to soar.
What you'll get to 'eat' depends on your individual performance, not waiting to see what 'salary' will reflect your 'capabilities' like bird feed.
Because there's plenty of bird feed, but live worms are quite scarce...
Unfortunately, that fundamental truth is understood by very few.
