The superhero squad Justice Society of America is set to make its cinematic debut in the epic Black Adam, starring 4 iconic members - Doctor Fate, Hawkman, Atom Smasher, and Cyclone.
Recently, Warner Bros. dropped the first official trailer for the highly-anticipated Black Adam, also revealing the Justice Society of America (JSA) - considered DC's first superhero team, predating the Justice League of America (JLA) by about two decades.
JSA made its first appearance in All-Star Comics #3 (1940) with members including Doctor Fate, Hourman, The Spectre, Sandman, Atom, Flash, Green Lantern, and Hawkman. Despite their initial fame, their prominence dwindled in the superhero comic genre in the late '40s, leading to their official disbandment in issue #57 (1951). Many years later, DC resurrected several JSA members, combining them and creating the JLA. Subsequently, JSA officially returned in the Earth-Two universe, coexisting with JLA in Earth-One, paving the way for future multiverse crossovers.
It wasn't until the late '90s that Black Adam crossed paths with JSA, eventually becoming their ally and forming a special bond with Atom Smasher. The upcoming DC cinematic universe blockbuster is likely to explore this dynamic, and for now, audiences will meet 4 JSA members on the big screen: Doctor Fate, Hawkman, Atom Smasher, and Cyclone.
The origin and power of Doctor Fate

Kent Nelson, also known as Doctor Fate, stands out as one of DC's most adept magic users. His power originates from Nabu, a celestial being born into the universe, hailed as the Lord of Order and an embodiment of harmony. Thousands of years ago, Nabu descended to Earth, assuming a mortal guise, becoming an advisor to Prince Khufu Kha-taar, and forming an alliance with Teth-Adam (Black Adam) for an extended period.
In the early 20th century, Kent Nelson and his father unearthed Nabu's tomb, resurrecting the ancient sorcerer. However, during this process, Nabu inadvertently killed Nelson's father. Overwhelmed by remorse, Nabu decided to bestow power upon Nelson, training him for two decades to become a formidable sorcerer. Nabu even gifted his apprentice numerous magical artifacts like the Anubis amulet, the Fate helmet, and the Destiny cloak to amplify Nelson's powers, molding him into the perfect Doctor Fate.
Doctor Fate, a founding member of the JSA, centers his strength on magic, earning him the title of the most potent sorcerer in the DC universe. Possessing an endless font of energy, Doctor Fate can flexibly utilize various superpowers like flight, invisibility, teleportation, extrasensory perception, or remote object manipulation.
Additionally, Doctor Fate is immortal, setting him apart significantly from contemporaneous superheroes. The Fate helmet provides a substantial advantage in battle, erasing personal emotions and rendering him immune to magical attacks. Even without the helmet, Doctor Fate remains a formidable adversary, instilling fear in anyone who crosses his path.
Pierce Brosnan, known as 'James Bond,' takes on the role of Doctor Fate in the much-anticipated blockbuster Black Adam.
The origin and power of Hawkman

Hawkman stands as one of DC's most intricately woven characters, having undergone multiple reimaginings in this comic universe. During the Golden Age, Hawkman's origins intertwined with both Black Adam and Doctor Fate, likely serving as a prime source of inspiration for Warner Bros. in their upcoming blockbuster.
In this rendition, Hawkman becomes the reincarnated soul of Prince Khufu Kha-taar, adopting the modern identity of American archaeologist Carter Hall. Hall ingeniously crafts various gadgets from Nth metal, such as gravity-defying belts, wings, protective helmets, armor, gloves, and boots.
Nth metal is a unique substance originating from a spaceship belonging to an extraterrestrial race called Thanagarians, unfortunately crashing on Earth. The seer Nabu predicted this accident and informed Khufu and Teth-Adam to study and 'harvest' the metal.
After reincarnating as Carter Hall, Khufu endeavors to harness the potential of Nth metal, transforming into Hawkman and co-founding the JSA with other DC superheroes. This rare metal imparts numerous superpowers, especially the ability to fly. Hall melts it down, creating various artifacts and weapons, including the formidable Claw of Horus - one of the most potent relics in the DC universe.
In terms of power, Hawkman possesses various superpowers tied to the reincarnation of Khufu's soul. Before becoming Carter Hall, Prince Khufu underwent multiple resurrections as different individuals, gaining extensive experience and skills across various domains. Ultimately, he emerges as a formidable warrior with a diverse and powerful arsenal. After reincarnating as Carter Hall, Khufu creates the Hawkman armor, enhancing speed, vision, strength, and flight capabilities.
Aldis Hodge, known for his roles in projects like Leverage and Invisible Man, takes on the role of Hawkman in the blockbuster Black Adam.
The Origin and Power of Atom Smasher

Albert Rothstein/Atom Smasher is the prodigious son of Al Pratt (Golden Age Atom) and the grandson of Cyclotron, an unwitting hero who gained superpowers from the experiment of the villain Ultra-Humanite. Manipulated and forced to battle Atom, Cyclotron perished in the fight against this villain, passing on his entire strength to Atom.
Meanwhile, Terri, Cyclotron's daughter, absorbed radiation from her father and transmitted it to her son, Albert. Subsequently, Albert embarked on a superhero career with the alias Nuklon before transitioning to Atom Smasher upon joining JSA, establishing a close-knit bond, even more intimate than siblings, with Black Adam.
Much like his predecessors, Atom Smasher possesses the ability to dynamically change size, setting a record of 60 feet (over 18 meters) in the comics, making him a formidable adversary capable of 'weighing' against many DC superheroes or villains (though still unable to match up to Superman or Black Adam). Additionally, he is a skilled pilot and mechanic, often taking on the responsibility of piloting JSA's jet - Steel Eagle.
Noah Centineo will portray the role of Atom Smasher in Black Adam.
The Origin and Power of Cyclone

Maxine Hunkel, aka Cyclone, is the newest addition to JSA in Black Adam, making her debut in Justice Society of America #1 (2006). Hunkel, the granddaughter of Red Tornado (Abigail “Ma” Hunkel), is also an avid JSA enthusiast.
As a child, Hunkel was kidnapped by the eccentric scientist T.O. Morrow (creator of the second Red Tornado android) and injected with Red Tornado nanobyte technology. This granted her wind-related superpowers, which only manifested years later. A lively and outspoken individual, Cyclone was invited to join the JSA, becoming one of the youngest members of the team.
As mentioned, harnessing and manipulating wind is at the core of Cyclone's abilities, allowing her to effortlessly create cyclones, tornadoes, or unleash energy bursts resembling hurricanes towards adversaries. Additionally, she can glide on the wind (similar to flying), counter attacks with wind, or manipulate natural wind phenomena.
Quintessa Swindell, known for roles in Trinkets and In Treatment, takes on the role of Cyclone in the blockbuster Black Adam.
