If the computer doesn't display icons
For Windows 7, right-click on the desktop, then select View> Show desktop icons to display the icons again.
For Windows XP, right-click on the desktop, then choose Arrange Icon By > Show desktop icons to show shortcut icons.

For both Windows 7 and Windows XP, use the combination Ctrl-Alt-Delete, then go to File > New Task (Run..) to activate a new Run window.
Here, locate the path containing the file Explorer.exe (C:\Windows\explorer.exe) and then press OK.
