An innovative video showcasing single-celled organisms navigating through the intestines of a termite has clinched victory in the 2021 Nikon Small World in Motion competition. Now in its 11th year, this microscopic video contest continues to offer astonishing insights into the world of tiny creatures.

For nearly 50 years, the Nikon Small World photography competition has celebrated microscope photography. And 11 years ago, the competition expanded to include a video category called Small World in Motion. Nikon states that the competition is a testament to the rapid advancement of new microscope technologies.

First Prize - The Symbiotic Bond between Termites and Single-Celled Parasites

The highest honor this year goes to an unprecedented video depicting the symbiotic relationship between termites and protozoan parasites living within their intestines. These microorganisms assist in wood digestion but are known for their sensitivity to light and oxygen, making capturing their movements without harming either the host or the parasite quite challenging.

Second Prize - The Formation and Spread of Tumors within the Human Body

Second place goes to Stephanie Hachey & Christopher Hughes, two molecular biologists from the University of California, Irvine. The duo endeavored to create a mesmerizing time-lapse video showcasing the formation and metastasis of a minuscule tumor in the human body over a span of 10 days.

Third Prize - Water Strider Giving Birth

Taking third position is Ukrainian microscopy photographer Andrei Savitsky with his fascinating video capturing a water strider giving birth.
