Nathaniel Galicia Chien is at the helm of a brand-new Model Y cruising on Interstate 580 (USA) when he starts hearing a loud rush of wind inside the cabin. 'Initially, I thought a window was open, but about 30 seconds later, the entire glass roof above the car flew off,' Chien recounts in an email sent to The Verge. In reality, the vehicle's quality has been a longstanding issue for Tesla. Electric vehicle owners collectively have taken to online platforms to complain about paint and trim issues, seat dents, and loose seatbelts. However, a complete glass roof detachment has never been recorded before.

Fortunately, after the glass panel flew off, it didn't hit anyone, so no one was injured. Chien immediately notified the California Highway Patrol about the potential danger on the road, then drove back to a nearby Tesla dealership for repairs. Here, a Tesla representative suggested that 'a malfunction in the reinforcement process may have caused the roof panel not to be securely fastened.' The dealership offered free repairs for the mentioned Model Y and proposed providing a temporary rental car for Chien's family during the waiting period, which he declined. Chien believes his parents might consider purchasing a different car.
