Hanoi secures the second position and Ho Chi Minh City stands sixth in the list of 10 cities with the cheapest hotel room rates.
The renowned travel website Hotels.com has recently unveiled a list of cities with the most expensive and budget-friendly hotel room rates globally. Vietnam's two major cities, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, both make it to the top 10 destinations with affordable room rates. In 2013, the average hotel room rate in Hanoi was $65.2 per night, marking a 20% decrease from 2012 ($81.9). In Ho Chi Minh City, travelers can expect to spend $95.3 for a night's stay, a 2% decrease compared to the previous year ($98.6).
The other eight cities on this super affordable list include Phnom Penh (ranking first) with a nightly room rate of $55. Siem Reap secures the third spot with a room rate of $70.2. Thailand's Chiang Mai ranks fourth ($76.9) and Pattaya fifth ($76.9). The remaining four cities securing positions six through ten are Riga ($102), Bangkok ($102), Krakow ($103.6), and Vilnius ($107).
On the other end of the spectrum, the most expensive destination for hotel accommodations in 2013 was Monte Carlo in Monaco, with an average nightly rate of $331.1. Muscat in Oman takes the second spot with $324.4 per night. New York City ranks third ($309), followed by Key West in fourth place ($285.9). Rio de Janeiro in Brazil secures the fifth position on the list with an average rate of $279.2. The remaining five cities in the top 10 expensive destinations for hotels include Cancun ($265.9), Moscow ($259.2), Boston ($252.5), Cannes ($252.5), and Geneva ($250.8).
