UNESCO has just passed a resolution recognizing Non nuoc Cao Bang geopark as a global geopark.
Vietnam's Second Global Geopark Found in Cao Bang
The resolution was passed at 6:00 PM (local time) on April 12th at the 204th session held in Paris. According to the criteria, Non nuoc Cao Bang geopark is recognized based on scale and landscape, local management and participation, economic development, education, protection, and conservation. The three main objectives of the global geopark are conservation, education, and promoting the local economy through geotourism.
Approximately 300 km from the capital city of Hanoi, Non nuoc Cao Bang global geopark is situated in the northeast region of Vietnam, covering an area of over 3,000 square kilometers. The geopark encompasses 6 districts: Ha Quang, Tra Linh, Quang Uyen, Trung Khanh, Ha Lang, Phuc Hoa, and parts of Hoa An, Nguyen Binh, and Thach An districts.

Currently home to over 250,000 people from 9 ethnic minority groups, the area boasts approximately 215 cultural and historical sites, including 3 particularly significant national heritage sites.
When visiting Cao Bang, tourists must not miss famous attractions such as Ban Gioc Waterfall, Thang Hen Lake, Ngườm Ngao Cave, Pac Bo Cave... Besides historical and cultural sites, the distinctive cuisine of the mountainous province also provides unforgettable experiences in your journey.
Previously, Dong Van Karst Plateau in Ha Giang was recognized by UNESCO as a global geopark in October 2010. This event increased the number of global geoparks in Southeast Asia to 5: Langkawi – Malaysia (2007), Dong Van – Vietnam (2010), Batur – Indonesia (2012), Gunung Sewa – Indonesia (2015), and the latest being Cao Bằng – Vietnam.
Before this recognition review session, there were a total of 127 global geoparks in the world, located in 35 countries recognized by UNESCO. This designation is for a clearly defined natural area with geographical-administrative boundaries, containing a collection of internationally significant geological heritage proven to have scientific, educational, and aesthetic value. Alongside are other values related to biodiversity, archaeology, history, socio-cultural aspects, etc.
