Vinyl Triumphs Over CD Sales for the First Time in Decades

According to information provided by RIAA, vinyl sales now make up 62% of the total profit in the physical disc format, surpassing CDs for the first time since the '80s. In the first half of 2020, music listeners purchased more vinyl records than CDs, turning it into the most consumed music format. Out of the total profit of 376 million USD in the first half of 2020, vinyl accounted for 232 million USD, approximately 62% of the total revenue.

It's also important to note that profits from physical discs were significantly impacted by the closure of many record stores and shopping centers due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In its latest announcement, RIAA reveals that the music industry continues its upward trajectory, albeit on a modest scale, during the first and second quarters of this year. Profits from downloads amount to $351 million, while disc sales contribute $376 million. However, these figures still fall short of the $421 million in profits generated by advertising-supported music streaming services.
