The heron island is situated in the water lake of Nam Hoa Park, Hung Yen city, formerly known as Lo Noi marsh. Since the 1990s, this island has been home to numerous heron flocks, thus becoming a beautiful natural spectacle amidst the city.
Visit Hung Yen to admire the natural heron island amidst the city
In Vietnamese folklore, the heron is closely associated with the lives of the people. Many folk songs have depicted this, such as:
'When the heron goes out at night
It perches on soft branches and plunges its neck into the pond'

Birds flew from the door to the meadow.

In 2003, Hung Yen city successfully transformed Dam Lo Noi into Nam Hoa Park, preserving the island in the middle of the lake with lush bamboo to conserve the natural stork population. By 2005, the park had a water surface of over 12 hectares, with a stork island covering nearly 4,000 square meters.

Due to the fertile land for birds, storks flock to build nests and breed on the island, estimated to be over ten thousand storks of various types: white storks, white-billed storks, yellow-billed storks, and more. There are also herons, egrets, and other species.

Every day, local residents stroll along the four streets surrounding the lake: Le Lai, Doan Thi Diem, Vu Trong Phung, Nguyen Cong Hoan, watching the storks fly out to search for food and return to their nests.

In the early morning, the sound of flapping wings signals the start of a new day as tens of thousands of storks take flight, while the dawn's light seeps into every corner of the city. As dusk falls, white storks fly back to the island, captivating many students who come to admire the gleaming white wings over the shimmering lake.

Storks have become inseparable companions to the people of Hung Yen city. Every time a stork soars above the lake, people hurriedly take cover, as each flight heralds impending rain.

Protecting the stork island has become a collective consciousness among the local population. No one captures storks for captivity or collects stork eggs. Storks consider humans as friends, with many casually grooming their wings by the lake's edge, unfazed by the crowds strolling through the park.

The stork island is lined with rocks and additional bamboo, while the park is revamped to be more spacious, with various exercise and recreational facilities installed. During park renovations, the storks fly away due to sensitivity to noise. However, they don't stray far, and when the atmosphere returns to tranquility, the storks return.
