Embark on a Northwestern Vietnam adventure to King Le Loi Temple in Lai Chau

Northwestern Vietnam tours are renowned not only for their golden terraced fields and majestic mountains but also for their historically significant sites, echoing the heroic legacy of our ancestors. Among these, in Nam Nhun district, Lai Chau province, lies a prominent historical site: the temple complex of King Le Thai To and the stele of King Le Thai To (King Le Loi).

The temple complex is situated approximately 110 km southwest of downtown Lai Chau, in Le Loi commune and Pu Dao commune, Nam Nhun district. It was constructed to honor the contributions of the national hero Le Loi, who played a pivotal role in pacifying the Northwestern region. Perched on a strategic, elevated position, the temple offers panoramic views in all directions.

The temple is notably home to a priceless artifact, the Le Loi stele. This unique relic is entirely distinct from previously discovered inscriptions, bearing immense historical significance and standing as a cultural masterpiece of the talented national hero.

This inscription recounts the historical event of King Le Thai To personally leading the armies to suppress rebellions in the Northwest region. In 1431, after pacifying the Northwest region, while returning through the territory of Le Loi commune, Nam Nhun district (present-day), to admonish the prison chiefs managing the border areas of the motherland, the king had this event inscribed on the rock face of Pu Huoi Cho by the North bank of the Da River to commemorate it for future generations.

In 2005, the Son La hydroelectric plant commenced construction. To avoid flooding, the inscribed stone tablet of King Le Thai To was relocated. In 2012, the Le Loi tablet was moved from the Pu Huoi Cho rock face to the courtyard of the King Le Thai To temple 500m away from its original location. The Le Loi tablet was recognized as a national treasure at the end of 2016 and classified as a National Historical Site at the beginning of 2017.

In the early days of the year, tourists from the Northwest and across the country visit to explore the national treasure - the Le Loi tablet; to learn about the brave, wise, strategically skilled king in Vietnamese history. Additionally, they visit the temple with hopes for abundant health and prosperity in the new year.
