Over a year since the release of VLC 2.0, VLC 2.5 for Android is now available on the Google Play Store. This update supports 360-degree videos, features a dynamic UI compatible with Material Design, adds Picture-in-Picture mode for Android Oreo devices, and integrates DayNight mode.

The latest release of VLC for Android, namely VLC 3.0, had a hiccup and the revamped multimedia library underwent some restructuring. Despite the absence of updates for the past 13 months, the app remains functional and under active development, with new tools set to debut soon,” stated Geoffrey Métais, an Android developer at VideoLAN, on his blog.
App startup time and video playback have been enhanced
Among other notable features introduced in VLC 2.5 release for Android is the background music playback which now includes a blurred image, allowing seamless continuation of media playback when attached as podcasts or audiobooks, alongside improvements in app startup time and video playback.
Moreover, the new VLC version also enables users to search for videos within a 10-second span upon double-tapping on the edges of their Android device screens and implements Auto Android compatibility feature. The Android TV interface has also been enhanced in this VLC 2.5 version, eliminating sound reduction feature upon notifications and adding support for devices with large screen ratios, such as Samsung Galaxy S8 and LG G6.
Video playback performance has also seen significant improvement, supporting VP8, VP9, and VP10 in MP4 format, Adaptive (HLS/Dash), and TS as well as HDMI. The app utilizes OpenGLES 2.0 for video rendering.
