Various Ways to Delete Photos on Android Phones
If you're facing issues with not being able to delete photos, you can explore some methods below to delete photos on your Android phone.
Method 1: Restart Your Phone
If you can't delete photos on your Android phone, the first solution is to restart it to refresh the device. Sometimes, the cause of the error may be temporary accumulated files or full storage.
Method 2: Delete Photos Correctly
The only way to delete photos in the photo gallery is to press the Delete button. However, if you use Google Photos as the photo gallery app, the steps to delete photos will be more complicated.
If you're using an offline photo gallery app without storing photos in cloud services, simply press the Delete button to remove photos. If backup is enabled on Google Photos or other cloud storage services, there are two ways to delete photos:
- Case 1: Open the image, find and press the Delete button in the bottom right corner to delete the photo from the phone and cloud service.
- Case 2: By swiping up or pressing the 3-dot icon, the screen will display the option Delete from device.
Choose the option to delete the photo from your Android phone. However, due to Google Photos constantly syncing with the cloud, only the local copy of the photo on the phone is deleted.
Method 3: Check Other Cloud Services
Besides Google Photos, check if other cloud services are activated on your Android phone, such as Samsung or Huawei cloud services.
To disable these services, go to Settings => Accounts. Find and select your cloud account; on the screen, you'll see the items being synced. If the photo library app is activated, simply disable the app.
Next, find and delete the photos you want. This action will remove photos from your phone and cloud services.
Method 4: Clean Trash Bin
Most photo library apps have a trash bin folder that stores deleted images for 30 - 60 days; after this period, the images will be permanently deleted.
Clean your trash bin and restart your phone to see if the photos have been completely deleted.
Method 5: Clear Cache Memory
Sometimes, the reason for the issue of not being able to delete photos on Android phones may be the app library's cache memory, such as Google Photos. Follow the steps below to clear the app library's cache memory and fix the issue:
Step 1: Open the Settings app on your Android phone => Apps & notifications. On some devices, this section may be named Apps.
Step 2: The screen will display a list of installed apps. Tap the 3-dot icon in the top corner and choose Show system apps.
Step 3: Find and select Media storage.
Step 4: Tap Storage => Clear cache.
Follow similar steps to clear the Google Photos cache and caches of other photo library apps installed on the device.
Method 6: Remove the SD Card
If photos are stored on an external SD card, the reason for not being able to delete photos may be a faulty SD card. Try removing and reinserting the SD card, then delete photos to see if the issue persists.
If you still can't delete photos, move the photos to the phone's internal storage and attempt to delete them. If the deletion is successful, the issue may be with the faulty or damaged SD card. In this case, transfer all data from the phone to a computer and format the SD card.
Method 7: Delete the Thumb Image Folder
Additionally, you can delete the folder containing thumb images to fix the issue of not being able to delete photos on an Android phone.
Open the File Explorer app on your phone. In the app settings window, enable the option Show hidden files. After enabling the option, access the DCIM folder, where you will find a folder named .thumbnails. Select all files in the folder and delete them.
Finally, restart your Android phone and check if the photos have been deleted.
Method 8: Uninstall App Settings
If you've tried the above methods and still can't delete photos on your Android phone, the last solution is to uninstall the photo library app, such as Google Photos.
To do this, go to Settings => Apps. Find and select the photo library app => choose Uninstall. Alternatively, tap the 3-dot icon at the top corner, select Uninstall Updates. After uninstalling the app settings, restart the device and visit the Play Store to find and reinstall the app.
