How Google Determines Network Quality
Currently, Android relies on the Usage & Diagnostics feature to collect this type of data. When you connect your mobile to an open network, like Starbucks, for instance, the network speed (along with other information) is shared with Google. Over time, if you continue to connect to that network and the information continues to be shared with Google, a database of network speed and reliability will gradually be formed.
Once this data is collected sufficiently, the Network Ratings feature will provide you with information about network quality before connecting. Small retail stores may lack rating information or may take longer to gather data, especially if they have less traffic compared to Starbucks.
Is Google Collecting Personal User Data, Right or Wrong? Doesn't Sound Good at All!
In a world where personal information is shared instantly, it's a grave oversight not to consider the security implications of this feature - especially when sharing data. The short answer here is similar to most shared data: this data is always transmitted anonymously. Google doesn't collect information about your activities when connecting to public networks - although we clearly advise against handling personal tasks when using public networks - but rather only accesses the most basic data.
Of course, although commonly used to collect network data, the Usage & Diagnostics feature gathers more than just network data. This is an extremely broad data collection tool, supporting Google in 'enhancing the quality of products and services for all users'. This data includes your battery level, app usage frequency, and the quality/length of network connections for both WiFi and Bluetooth.
How to Disable the Usage & Diagnostics Sharing Feature
To disable the Usage & Diagnostics sharing feature, swipe down the notification panel and tap the settings icon to open the Settings menu on your phone.
From here, scroll down to Google and select it.
Tap on the three-dot icon at the top right corner of the screen, select 'Usage & Diagnostics'.
Swipe to turn off this feature and exit. Your mobile will not share any additional information, although you can still access all information shared by other users, such as Network Ratings.
