Exploring Bình Thủy Orchards
- From Cần Thơ, heading towards Bình Thủy, travelers can take National Highway 91 towards An Giang for approximately 6 km, or opt for the longer route via Vòng Cung road, which allows for orchard exploration.
- From Bình Thủy market, follow Highway 28 passing through Bình Thủy, Long Hòa, and Long Tuyền wards. This route will also lead you to the Bình Thủy orchard region.
- Travelers can also take tourist boats operated by travel companies and private individuals (departing from Ninh Kiều Wharf), or opt for small boats or canoes to venture into the lush green orchards along the winding canals, offering a delightful experience.
The Waterways of the Mekong Delta
On either side of Bà Bộ canal, Hàng Bàng canal, and Nước Lạnh canal are orchards filled with milkfruit, oranges, mangoes - each season bringing its own harvest. The trees are so low that you can simply walk across and pluck the fruits with your hands. Bình Thủy boasts an intricate network of rivers and canals, with names that echo the local culture such as Cam canal, Chanh canal, Ông Vựa canal, Bà Chủ Kiểu canal, Cái Sơn canal, Miễu Ông canal, Bông Vang canal, Cái Tắc canal, Chuối canal... Walking through the village paths, crossing the precarious monkey bridges is an exciting experience for those unfamiliar with the distinctive primitive bridges of the Mekong Delta. Now, these monkey bridges are merely models serving eco-tourism and outdoor activities. Foreigners particularly enjoy crossing these bridges over the river. They proceed cautiously, step by step, to enter the beautiful gardens.
Historical Site: Plum Garden
The historical and cultural site of Plum Garden, located in Bình Thường A area, Long Tuyền ward, is where visitors delve into the local history during the tumultuous years of the anti-American resistance war. At Ngã Bác canal, visitors hear the locals recount the glorious feats and extremely brave sacrifices of the hero Việt Sơn Nguyễn Văn Bì: he pretended to surrender to the enemy and led them into a minefield, perishing together...
Ông Hổ Temple
Following Highway 28 (also known as Sóng Lươn road), passing by Miễu Ông market to visit Ông Hổ Temple, you'll hear legends of two 'Mr. Tigers' fighting over territory, both ultimately perishing in battle! Inside the temple, there's a folk painting depicting the two 'gentlemen' engaged in combat, with vivid and realistic strokes.
In this area, there are numerous eateries, including the delicious 'mắm hotpot' featuring freshly caught shrimp, fish, and garden vegetables. There's also the Long Tuyền Agricultural Cooperative, a renowned model for producing clean fruits and vegetables in Cần Thơ City. Visitors on this rustic agricultural tour will have the opportunity to converse and interact with sincere and hospitable farmers.
Orchid Garden
Visiting Bình Thủy without exploring the Orchid Garden would be a great loss. The Orchid Garden boasts a 5-compartment ancient house nearly 140 years old, renowned throughout the Mekong Delta. Currently owned by Mr. Dương Minh Hiển, descendant of the Dương family, this house has contributed to elevating the name of the region 'Bình Thủy - Cần Thơ' beyond national borders, reaching friends across continents. The film 'The Lover', directed by French director J.J Annaud, used this ancient house for filming scenes...
The Orchid Garden ancient house was built in a unique style, blending Eastern and Western cultures in the late 19th and early 20th centuries (1870). The elevated stone-paved courtyard, with paths on both sides and a large number of folding doors on the front facade, features a roof with reliefs and various floral patterns and motifs. The intricate carvings on the beams, columns, as well as the decorative motifs such as arches, lintels, railings, and bas-reliefs of the four sacred animals (dragon, unicorn, tortoise, phoenix) painted in gold. The interior also houses many precious antiques. The Orchid Garden ancient house is one of the remaining traces of the past, nearly a century and a half old, reminiscent of the ancestors' era of land exploration in the South. In the garden, there is a nearly 8m tall dragon bone cactus, known as the 'Golden Tomb Pillar', which stands out and leaves a lasting impression...
Bình Thủy Communal House
Bình Thủy District also boasts the Bình Thủy Communal House and numerous cultural relics, rich in ecotourism potential, which can contribute to the tourism of Cần Thơ City and the Mekong Delta. With its green, clean, and beautiful environment, coupled with the preservation of its distinctive cultural and traditional features, Bình Thủy offers a unique, captivating ambiance. Hopefully, in the near future, visiting Long Tuyền Ancient Village - the orchard-filled water region of Bình Thủy - will be included in the itinerary and become a must-visit destination for domestic and international tours to the Mekong Delta.
