What are the taxes and fees for airline tickets?
For those who rarely use non-airline services, especially first-time ticket buyers, there are often many questions regarding taxes and fees such as: What are taxes and fees? Why do we have to pay additional taxes and fees when buying airline tickets?,...
In reality, taxes and fees in the non-airline industry do not always include mandatory taxes, fees, and surcharges. Unlike airline ticket prices, this amount is usually paid to the government or airports for:
- Value-added tax.
- Surcharge imposed by airports.
- Regulations on state budget revenue sources.
- Airport services such as security screening, customer service, parking, etc.
Therefore, the taxes and fees of Vietnam Airlines, Vietjet Air, Jetstar Pacific, and Bamboo Airways are similar in form, only differing in how prices are calculated.

Why do we have to pay additional taxes and fees when booking flights?

The taxation and fees imposed by airlines
How would airplane tickets appear if they displayed all taxes and fees?
At the beginning of September, the Civil Aviation Authority received a proposal from Vietnam Airlines, the national carrier, requesting all remaining domestic carriers to implement gross fares. This means displaying airplane ticket prices inclusive of all taxes and fees, avoiding misunderstandings from customers and unfair price competition.
So, how would airplane ticket prices from airlines appear if they displayed all taxes and fees? Essentially, the amount you have to pay to purchase an airplane ticket remains unchanged, but the displayed price on the website, when inclusive of taxes and fees, will significantly increase. For instance, when searching for airplane tickets from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City, the usual displayed price is 600,000 VND. Upon selecting a ticket, the system will display an additional 550,000 VND in taxes and fees, making the total 1,150,000 VND. However, implementing the gross fare policy with full taxes and fees, the price on the website will remain fixed at 1,150,000 VND. This may deter many customers who intend to purchase airplane tickets, especially those with a mindset of hunting for cheap airplane tickets.
Therefore, to utilize this air transportation means, we will always have to adhere to the requirement of paying additional taxes and fees whether we want to or not. This is considered both a right and a responsibility of everyone. The only thing you need to pay attention to when booking airplane tickets is to carefully check whether the price includes taxes and fees to book the most accurate price.
