Palmyran villagers demonstrate remarkable speed in their work, especially in tasks like mining minerals, hunting deer, and processing elephant meat. Consequently, whenever players opt for Palmyran troops, they have ample time to advance through ages early on, while their opponents are still struggling to catch up.

Palmyran units excel in both resource gathering speed and combat strength compared to units of other civilizations. Explore the advantages, disadvantages, and strategies for playing with Palmyran troops in Age of Empires below.
Advantages of Palmyran Troops
- Palmyran villagers gather food, wood, stone, and gold 25% faster. (Excluding farming and construction)
- Palmyran villagers have +1 armor, providing protection against both melee and ranged attacks.
- One Palmyran farm can support 2 villagers gathering resources simultaneously.
- Transferring resources to allies is free starting from Age 1.
- Palmyran camels move 25% faster. (Fastest movement speed among all units in Age of Empires, equivalent to Scout Cavalry)
- Possess War Elephant, Composite Bowman, Scythe Chariot (single attack), Horse Archer. Upgrades include Fire Galley and Head Blood.
- If resources are abundant, Palmyran players should aim for 16 to 22 villagers to advance ages quickly and overpower opponents.
Downsides of Palmyran Forces
- Palmyran peasants are costly, 50% more expensive than other units (75 food)
- Lack of +3 wood chopping bonus
- Incomplete technology for cavalry and artillery units.
- Facing a poor Palmyran hand makes advancing extremely challenging. Difficult to recover after being attacked due to high-cost peasants.
Playing Experience with Palmyran Forces
Starting Out
Allocate 2 villagers to construct the Blacksmith, while 1 villager searches for a fruit patch. When found, immediately assign 5 villagers to gather the fruits. The 6th villager advances to the 2nd Age and the 7th villager joins the fruit gathering. Alternatively, the 7th villager can be assigned to chop wood, if the fruit patch is abundant enough for 5 villagers to gather. The 6th villager, after completing the Blacksmith, should scout the map. Villagers 8 and 9 focus on woodcutting, while villagers 10 through 12 work on the Blacksmith. Aim to have villagers 11-13 build additional Blacksmiths to ensure sufficient wood income. Concentrate on maximizing wood production, aiming for approximately 2 Lumber Camps per Age (rough estimate). This can be adjusted to 3 Lumber Camps if specializing in archery. Upon reaching the 3rd Age, consider assigning 4-5 villagers to Gold mining or exclusively focus on wood production and expand to around 7-8 Farms if pursuing an archery-heavy strategy (Around 5 Farms can be constructed, sharing 1 farm between 2 villagers to conserve wood).
Normal attacks depend on your unit composition.
For Camel defense against Witch attacks: Required population for aging up is approximately 16 to 22 villagers depending on the situation (wealthier players may require fewer villagers and opt to tribute resources to pressure enemy Town Centers). - 2nd Age: While advancing to the 3rd Age, consider upgrading Gold Mining technology within the Market and assign 3-4 villagers to gold mining (5 villagers if resources permit). - 3rd Age: Construct 2 Barracks. You may choose to construct 1 defensive Barracks near your Town Center and another Barracks to counter Gold unit compositions. Upgrade your Attack if aging up ahead of your opponent. Upgrade Armor if facing early aggression. Upgrade Attack by 4 and Armor by 4 when feasible. Construct additional Barracks when resources are abundant in terms of wood, food, and Gold. Upgrade Wheelbarrow to facilitate archery combined with Camel usage. Upgrade Bloodlines. - 4th Age: To maintain mobility and gain an advantage over opponents, focus on constructing multiple Archery Ranges. Upon aging up, prioritize upgrades for Ballistics, Flaming Arrows, and quickly train Horse units and upgrade them to Horse Champions within the Archery Ranges. Additionally, accumulate sufficient food and Gold to advance to Horse Deity.
For Archer (R, A) strategies: Required population for aging up is approximately 22 or 25 villagers depending on the situation. - 2nd Age: While advancing to the 3rd Age, prioritize upgrading Woodcutting (within the Market, stone hammer icon). - 3rd Age: Construct 4 or 5 Barracks based on your wood economy, balancing wood and food resources. Construct a Blacksmith and mine 120 Gold > Upgrade Bloodlines (if resources allow). Upgrade Armor if facing aggressive opponents (arrow icon). Upgrade Woodcutting level 2 to increase range and efficiency in wood collection. Ensure solid defenses as Palmyrans face difficulty in recovering if villagers are lost. - 4th Age: Diversify unit compositions, incorporating Horse Champions, Double Cavalry, and Cannon Gods as per the situation.
