Essential documents required when buying a motorcycle
Before heading out to purchase a motorcycle, ensure you have the necessary documents to expedite the transaction process. When you go to the store to select your desired motorcycle and make the payment, you'll need to present: your national identification card, household registration book with the owner's name for the store to issue an accurate invoice for you.
Once the payment is settled, the next step involves receiving the motorcycle. You will receive various documents including:
– Motorcycle insurance certificate
– Attached motorcycle usage guide
– Purchase and sale agreement between buyer and seller
– Tax invoice and pre-sale vehicle quality inspection certificate (this is an important document, so make sure to check it upon receipt)
– Additionally, there may be some promotional items from each store (if available)

Motorcycle registration procedure
Once you have received your motorcycle, you also need to complete the process of paying the vehicle registration tax in order to register the license plate at the Traffic Police Department – Police of the district, town, or city. This is a mandatory procedure for all new motorcycles. You need to pay the tax before you can register the motorcycle. The procedures are as follows:
– Visit the vehicle registration tax office
– Apply for a new motorcycle tax declaration form
– Fill in all the required information accurately on the declaration form and wait for your turn to be called and pay the fee.
Finally, proceed to register your new motorcycle. When registering your motorcycle, you also need to bring along the necessary documents to the district, town, or city Police Department, including:
– National identification card and household registration book: each with 1 original and 1 photocopy
– Tax invoice: 1 original and 2 photocopies
– Factory quality inspection certificate you received upon delivery: 1 original + 2 photocopies.
After completing the new motorcycle registration process within about 2 days, you will go to the registration location to collect the vehicle registration certificate. The relevant authority department will return the original documents and retain the photocopies.
Additional information for you regarding the new motorcycle registration fee as stipulated in Article 5 of Decree 229/2016/TT-BTC is as follows:
- For motorcycles valued below 15 million dong in Hanoi and HCMC, the registration fee ranges from 500,000 to 1,000,000 dong. In other areas, it is 200,000 dong.
- Motorcycles valued from 15 – 40 million dong are charged 1-2 million in HCMC and Hanoi and 400,000 dong in other areas.
- Motorcycles valued over 40 million dong incur fees of about 2-4 million in HCMC and Hanoi. In other areas, the fee is lower at only 800,000 dong.
