What is ETC?
Etc is an abbreviation of the phrase et cetera, which originates from Latin, pronounced as 'et set-er-uh', which can be synonymous with so on, and more in English. Its meaning is 'And other things' (Et les autres choses).
- In Vietnamese, etc. means 'and so on' (abbreviated as v.v).
- 'Etc.' is used when the objects listed before belong to the same category or have clear classification criteria. In that case, the items in 'etc.' are understood to belong to that group.
Example:
I like many flowers – rose, daisy, orchid..etc.. (Correct because the listed items are all types of flowers)
I like various types of flowers – roses, daisies, orchids...and so forth...
