You might have heard about Apple's U1 chip somewhere, but perhaps you're still unclear about it. This article will help unravel the mysteries surrounding the U1 chip and its functionalities on iPhone and Apple Watch Series 6.
1. Understanding Chip U1:
Chip U1 (U stands for Ultra Wideband) is a chipset utilizing signal transmission technology in close range, similar to Bluetooth and WiFi. It can accurately determine the distance between two U1-equipped devices and conserve energy while in operation.
2. Purpose of Chip U1:
Chip U1 is engineered to provide spatial awareness, enabling more precise device location for Apple devices equipped with the chip compared to GPS, and facilitating quick data sharing via AirDrop.
For instance, if you wish to share data via AirDrop, simply point your iPhone towards the other person's device, and thanks to U1's tracking capabilities, their device will promptly appear at the top of your list.
In addition to AirDrop, the utility of the U1 chip is also manifested through the Car Key feature.
Specifically, the Car Key feature allows users to use their iPhone or Apple Watch instead of a car key using NFC signal transmission technology. With U1, you can even unlock your car without needing your iPhone or Apple Watch.
Since iOS 13, Apple has integrated the Find My Friends and Find My Phone features. It's highly likely that the U1 chip is used for locating friends and finding lost devices.
Perhaps Apple's utilization of the U1 chip for location tracking will pave the way for the release of accessories attached to objects (AirTag) which has been widely speculated about in the future.
The AirTag is believed to be a location device attached to objects such as backpacks, keys, etc., which can be tracked via Find My Phone.
3. Which Apple devices feature the U1 chip?
Currently (September 2020), the U1 chip is present on devices running iOS 13 or later, such as iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 11 Pro Max, and the newly released Apple Watch Series 6.
The Apple Watch Series 6 is the first Apple Watch device to utilize the U1 chip.
And in the future, Apple is likely to equip its U1 chip on many more devices and accessories. Hopefully, many features of the U1 chip will be unveiled by Apple soon. Nevertheless, this is definitely something worth waiting for.
