What is Clipboard memory on Android?
Clipboard, also known as transient memory on Android devices, is a storage area where small items can be temporarily stored. It is not an app, so it cannot be directly opened or accessed. Items stored there are accessed by pressing and holding on an empty area of the text field and selecting Paste. Some phones will only store one item in the Clipboard, which will be overwritten and lost if a second item is saved. Other phones will store up to 10 items, allowing users to choose the desired item from the list before Pasting.
On Samsung devices, Clipboard can be accessed by tapping the Settings gear icon near the bottom left of the default keyboard, then pressing the Clipboard icon from the options that appear, and recently saved items will be displayed.
When you save a text snippet to Clipboard on Android, the information is stored in RAM through the Clipboard service. On pure Android phones, there is no specific location for the phone's transient memory that allows you to view that information. On Samsung phones, the Clipboard history is saved in a file located in the /data/Clipboard directory.
However, you can still access the Clipboard history on any Android phone by using a clipboard management app like Clipper.
How to access, edit, and manage Clipboard with Clipper

- Open Google Play Store and install Clipper.
- Launch the Clipper app; when you long-press and copy a text snippet to save it to Clipboard, you'll see it appear inside the app's Clipboard dialog.
- Tap the 3 dots on the right of the excerpt in the Clipboard; you'll have the authority to view, edit, share, or even select that item to paste it anywhere else at your discretion.
- Without a clipboard manager like Clipper, you would only access the last item you copied to the clipboard. But such a tool allows you to access the clipboard history to use anything you've recently saved.
How to Delete Clipboard on Android Devices?
If you're copying and pasting sensitive information like passwords, that data will be stored in your phone's memory. What you'll want to do is clear out any sensitive clipboard items for security.
If using the Clipper app, when you click on the 3 dots next to a selection, you'll see the Delete option. You can use it to remove items from the Clipboard.
Another solution is to use the Gboard keyboard, which comes pre-installed on many new Android phones. If not available, you can install Gboard from the Google Play Store, then follow these steps:
- Open the messaging app on your Android phone and tap the plus sign on the left of the text field. Then, select the keyboard icon. When the keyboard appears, choose the > icon at the top of the keyboard. Here, tap on the clipboard icon to open the Android clipboard.
- If you haven't used the clipboard on your phone before, you'll see a Gboard clipboard enable notification. Tap on Turn on clipboard.
- Then, whenever you copy something to the clipboard and tap on the clipboard icon on the Google Android keyboard again, you'll see the history of recently added items to the clipboard.
- To remove a specific item from the clipboard, tap on the edit icon and select the item you want to remove. Finally, tap on the trash icon to complete the task.
The clipboard manager that comes with the native keyboard on your phone largely depends on the version and brand of your Android device.
