What is IPS Display?
IPS display, short for 'in-plane switching,' is a type of liquid crystal display (LCD). This technology was first developed and introduced to the market in 1974 but didn't gain much attention.

It wasn't until Hitachi, a Japanese conglomerate, enhanced this technology that it truly made waves in the market. The latest version to date is AH-IPS, developed by LG.
IPS displays are named after the liquid crystal material they use, which possesses characteristics of both liquids and crystals. This material is sandwiched between two transparent glass panels. When electricity flows, it generates a magnetic field that causes the liquid crystal to produce images displaying information.
Advantages of IPS Display
IPS displays are widely applied in various electronic products due to their numerous superior advantages, especially when compared to TN displays, the previously invented panel type. Specifically, these liquid crystal displays have the following advantages:
- Clear and vivid image display with diverse colors, thus highly regarded for their aesthetic appeal.
- Consistent color display, unaffected by light refraction or viewing angles.
- Images remain undisturbed by external impacts or the warmth of human touch.

Disadvantages of IPS Display
Certainly, IPS displays are not without their drawbacks. These limitations have yet to be fully addressed. However, because these drawbacks are not overly significant, liquid crystal displays continue to be preferred. Here are some disadvantages of this display type:
- Consumes over 15% more energy compared to TN type.
- Price tends to be higher than TN type.
- Potential for display errors.

Brands Utilizing IPS Display
Currently, many renowned brands opt for IPS displays for their monitors, laptop screens, TVs, and various other electronic devices. Particularly, most of their product lines use this type of display. Here are some major brands employing IPS liquid crystal displays:
- Samsung
- OPPO
- Vivo
- Huawei
- Apple
- Asus
- Dell
- LG
- Sony

IPS displays offer numerous advantages and are considered to play a particularly important role in today's electronic products. With these advantages, this type of display is expected to maintain its position for a long time. However, IPS LCDs may not be the most fascinating technology yet.
