2. Origin of Vietnamese Teachers' Day
In January 1946, an international organization of progressive educators was established in Paris, France, known as FISE (Féderation International Syndicale des Enseignants - International Federation of Teachers' Unions).
In 1949, at a conference in Warsaw, Poland, the International Federation of Teachers' Unions issued the 'Charter of Teachers,' comprising 15 chapters primarily focusing on the struggle against bourgeois, feudal education, and advocating for the rights and responsibilities of educators.
The Vietnam Teachers' Union, a member of FISE since 1953 (with 57 participating countries), decided during the FISE meeting from August 26th to 30th, 1957, in Warsaw, to designate November 20th, 1958, as 'International Teachers' Dedication Day.'
This day was first celebrated throughout North Vietnam. In the subsequent years, it was also observed in many liberated areas in South Vietnam. Annually on November 20th, the education sub-committee typically publishes and distributes special magazines to boost the morale of the educational community in other regions, encouraging the resilience of teachers in resistance.
When Vietnam reunified, this day became the traditional day of the Vietnamese education sector. On September 28th, 1982, the Council of Ministers (now the Government) issued Decision No. 167-HĐBT establishing November 20th every year as the holiday named 'Vietnamese Teachers' Day.'
