2. The Tale of Lá Diêu Bông
Poet Hoàng Cầm once recounted that he wrote “Lá Diêu Bông” one winter night in 1959 at his private residence on Lý Quốc Sư Street, Hanoi, inspired by a true love story of the author himself.
At that time, he was just an 8-year-old boy, during a visit to his grandparents in Đình Bảng village, Bắc Ninh province. In his mother's shop, he fell in love at first sight with a beautiful 16-year-old girl. Since then, he has silently admired the girl. The girl also knew his feelings but remained silent. Once, she jokingly said to him, “If anyone finds the Diêu Bông leaf, they will be considered my husband.”
Based on what he knew, he understood that there was no such thing as a diêu bông leaf in this world, but unwilling to let go of his feelings, he continued to tirelessly search for the diêu bông leaf. However, by the time he was 12 years old, the girl had already gotten married, burying his first feelings deep. It wasn't until 1959 that he composed the song “Diêu Bông Leaf”.
The poem vividly portrays the childhood of a young boy who harbored feelings for an older girl next door. Just because of a joke that finding a diêu bông leaf would make someone a husband, the boy believed it to be true. From then on, he always tried to find the diêu bông leaf to marry the girl.
3. Is the Diêu Bông Leaf Real?
Since the poem 'Diêu Bông Leaf' was created, or even when the song 'How Could You Hurry to Get Married' became well-known, even poet Hoàng Cầm and musician Trần Tiến believe that the Diêu Bông Leaf is not real, it's just a joke made by a girl to reject someone else's feelings.
Recently, after 10 years in seclusion, musician Trần Tiếng surprisingly appeared as a guest on the show 'Happy Memories'. He dressed very modestly, and during filming, he shared the story of the diêu bông leaf. When he heard the poem Diêu Bông Leaf, he also thought the diêu bông leaf was imaginary.
“Once when I was in Điện Biên, I was singing and an old lady asked me, “Do you like to search for the diêu bông leaf?” I thought it was a myth, a legend. “No, it's not a legend, people here in my village and some other areas have it too, but finding this leaf is very difficult, it has to be the right moon season, in the right forest area, and you can only see the leaf bloom under the moonlight, then that person will be extremely happy for life.” Later, I asked many people and they said the old lady was right, in Phong Thổ, during that moon season, on that day, you should go there and search.”
So, the diêu bông leaf is a real type of leaf in this world, not a fictional leaf, not imaginary as we often think.
