Located in the Arashiyama district west of Kyoto, this stunning forest is gaining popularity. In summer, sunlight piercing through the bamboo foliage creates dazzling streaks along the winding paths.
A few years ago, the Ministry of the Environment in Japan included the Sagano Bamboo Forest in the '100 Soundscapes of Japan' – places where locals should pause and relish in the natural music.
However, due to the high influx of visitors during the summer, it's advisable to come here early in the morning or late evening, and it's best to avoid weekends. This destination is open 24/7 and admission is free, making it a popular spot for day-trippers from the historic district of Kyoto.
At the entrance of the bamboo forest lies the northern gate of Tenryu-ji Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site and also one of Kyoto's five main temples. In Japan, temples and shrines are often situated near bamboo forests, playing a role in warding off evil spirits, while bamboo is considered a symbol of strength. Tenryu-ji Temple boasts a Zen garden among the finest in Japan and is currently the headquarters of the Rinzai Zen Buddhist school.
Additionally, visitors can explore the Okochi-Sanso villa, take a scenic boat ride on the Hozu River, or discover this beautiful land along the Sagano Scenic Railway route. If you have more time, consider renting a bike to explore the temples, eateries, and souvenir shops of Arashiyama.
Don't forget to visit the Togetsukyo Bridge over the Hozu River, where you may encounter Japanese tourists posing for photos in colorful kimonos. Before heading back, savor a cup of refreshing matcha ice cream at popular parlors in the region.
