The Canon PowerShot G5 X Mark II is a premium compact camera model with a 1-inch sensor, 5x optical zoom, 8.8-44mm focal length equivalent to 24-120mm on a full-frame sensor, pop-up viewfinder, tilting touchscreen, fast autofocus, and 4K video recording capability. This Canon camera was announced in July 2019, replacing the 3-year-old PowerShot G5 X model. It has undergone design adjustments to make it more user-friendly than the RX100 series. Some of its improvements include:
- The G5 X Mark II features a redesigned exterior, forming a unified body similar to the G7 X or G9 X instead of using the traditional SLR-like design of the G5 X. However, the G5 X Mark II still features an EVF viewfinder. This viewfinder is 'hidden' within the body of the camera and pops up when in use, measuring 0.39 inches with 2.36 million dots. This design will appeal to photographers who want a truly compact and convenient camera while ensuring image quality.
- The LCD screen can tilt 180 degrees, making recording, selfies, or vlogging simple and unique from various unusual angles.
- The zoom lens of the G5 X Mark II extends from 100mm to 120mm. Although the 20mm increase may not seem significant, it allows for more flexible photo and video capturing. Additionally, the magnification of the PowerShot G5 X Mark II has been improved from 0.24x to 0.47x compared to its predecessor, enlarging the subject size in close-up shots.
- After several iterations of PowerShot G models, Canon has equipped the G5 X Mark II with a Stacked CMOS sensor instead of BSI. The sensor size remains 1 inch with a resolution of 20MP, but data transmission capabilities will be faster. Paired with the DIGIC 8 processor, the G5 X Mark II can record 4K video at 25-30p, FHD 120p, or shoot at high speeds of 30 frames per second in RAW burst mode (20 frames per second in JPEG format).
- Other notable features include an improved Menu interface, similar to the EOS lineup, and simpler Wi-Fi settings.
- Battery life is not a strong point of this camera. With each full charge, it can only capture 230 shots with the LCD screen and 180 shots with the EVF viewfinder. However, the G5 X Mark II supports charging via USB-C, making it easier to address battery shortages. You can use a power bank for charging, eliminating the need for a power outlet as before.
