After the official release of Windows 10 1909, Microsoft is actively working on the 20H1 update, scheduled for May 2020. While larger than the November 2019 Update, it still feels like a collection of useful improvements. What can users anticipate from the Windows 10 20H1 Update?
What's New in Windows 10 20H1 Update?
1. Customize Update Installations to Your Preference
Users can now customize update installations according to their preferences
In the Windows 10 20H1 Update, users can easily see all updates in one place by going to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > View optional updates. From there, you can select the updates you want to install.
2. WSL 2 with a Unified Linux Kernel
WSL 2 utilizes a real Linux kernel to provide a more powerful and feature-rich Linux environment on Windows 10. Microsoft will build its own Linux kernel, bundled with WSL 2, and this kernel will be updated through Windows Update. You can also build your own Linux kernel and make Windows 10 use it.
3. Cloud Download for Windows Reinstallation
Reinstall Windows from the latest update.
Cloud Download will fetch the latest Windows files from Microsoft and use them to reinstall Windows. In other words, instead of reinstalling Windows 10 from local system files, Windows will download the latest version of Windows 10 and install it on your system.
4. Bandwidth Limitation for Windows Updates
The Settings app provides you with additional control over the bandwidth used for downloading Windows updates. In Windows 10 20H1, you can set an absolute bandwidth limit in Mbps.
5. New Cortana Experience
Type queries into Cortana in the chat window instead of speaking.
Microsoft is promoting a completely new 'Cortana experience' with a 'chat-based interface.' You can type queries into Cortana instead of speaking. The chat history with Cortana will appear as a chat window, allowing you to review recent query results by simply opening Cortana from the taskbar.
6. Faster Windows Search Experience
The search functionality in the Start Menu has been fixed. Microsoft achieved this by leveraging the existing Windows search indexer, running in the background and scanning your PC files to build a search database.
7. Display Drive Type and GPU Temperature in Task Manager
View Drive Type and Current CPU Temperature
Windows 10 Task Manager now displays your drive type: SSD or HDD. This information is located in the Performance tab. Open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) and click More Details. In the Performance tab, you can also check the current GPU temperature.
8. FPS Counter in Xbox Game Bar
The Windows 10 Game Bar, already featuring volume control, performance charts, and Spotify integration, now gets even better with an FPS counter and achievement overlay. Open Game Bar while playing a game, and you'll see real-time FPS stats without the need for third-party software or specific integrations.
9. Passwordless Sign-In
The option 'Make your device passwordless' in Windows 10 20H1
Microsoft allows users to sign in without a password with the option 'Make your device passwordless' found in Settings > Accounts > Sign-in. This is a new setting that requires users to log into your computer with a PIN or another Windows Hello login method such as facial recognition or fingerprint unlock.
10. Rename Virtual Desktops
Màn hình ảo trên Windows 10 xuất hiện khi bạn ấn tổ hợp phím Windows + Tab hoặc click vào biểu tượng Task View và giờ đây bạn có thể đổi tên chúng thay vì giữ nguyên cái tên Desktop 1 hay Desktop 2 mặc định.
11. Improved Network Status Information
View detailed network status information.
The network status page has been redesigned, providing more information about your device's connectivity by consolidating multiple pages to give you a clear overview of how you are connected to the Internet.
12. Improved Bluetooth Connectivity
Microsoft has enhanced the Bluetooth connectivity capabilities of Windows 10. Formerly known as Quick Pair, it is now called Swift Pair.
13. Customize Text Cursor Color
In 20H1, you can resize and change the color of the text cursor.
You can adjust the size and color of the text cursor in Settings > Ease of Access > Text Cursor.
14. Perform Drag-and-Drop Operations with Your Eyes
Windows 10 features Eye Control that works with specific eye-tracking devices. In 20H1, you can perform drag-and-drop operations simply by moving your eyes.
15. Enhanced Language Settings
Display the currently used language in the Language page
The Language settings now showcase the default language for Windows, apps, websites, keyboards, and more at the top of the screen. This update also provides better support for non-English languages. The intelligent touch keyboard feature SwiftKey now supports 39 different languages.
16. Disk Cleanup Won't Delete the Download Folder
With this new update, the Download folder has been excluded from the classic Disk Cleanup app. You can still use Disk Cleanup to clean up the recycle bin, delete temporary files, remove old Windows installations, and more.
In addition to the notable features and improvements mentioned above, the Windows 10 20H1 Update also introduces various other changes such as quick search capabilities on the Search Home, rapid toggling of apps that launch with the system, upgraded Tablet Mode, and much more. Originally planned for a spring 2020 release, it seems users might experience the update sooner than expected.
