You can opt to file a dispute if the recipient refuses to return the money you mistakenly sent. Follow these steps:
Step 1: Click on 'Resolution Center' near the top of the page to file a dispute if the recipient does not refund the money. Choose 'Dispute a Transaction' before clicking 'I Have a Problem With an Item I Purchased.' Click 'Continue' when done.
Step 2: Enter the transaction ID from the payment you're disputing. You can find the transaction ID by clicking the 'Find Transaction ID' button and locating the payment in your account history. Click the corresponding transaction ID for the incorrect payment. Click 'Continue' when done.
Step 3: Select 'I Haven't Received My Item' and then click 'Continue'.
Step 4: You can choose any category because PayPal does not provide specific categories for errors. Then, enter a brief message explaining the mistake of sending money to the wrong address. PayPal will forward this message to the recipient of your payment and give them an opportunity to respond. You and the other party can exchange messages through the Resolution Center.
Since filing a dispute report, you'll have to wait for 20 days. If the recipient of the mis-sent payment remains adamant about not returning it, you can escalate the complaint to PayPal. PayPal will then review all the messages exchanged between both parties via the Resolution Center and make a final decision regarding your complaint. If PayPal's decision favors you, the money will be refunded to your account thereafter.
