Disassemble the Machine
1. Find a screwdriver and a thin-blade or another small, flat, and thick cutting tool. You need to use the screwdriver to remove the screws and the cutting tool to pry and remove the cover.
2. Many types of machines will allow you to remove the cover that holds the keyboard onto the body of the machine. If your machine is designed like this, remove the screws. Proceed carefully and meticulously to avoid damaging or severing any cables at hard-to-detect locations.
3. After loosening the keyboard, remove the cover and use a cutting tool to pry gently. Avoid using excessive force. If you can't remove the cover, check if there are any screws left. If the cover has cables plugged into the body, detach these cables.
4. Remove the keyboard carefully, avoiding damaging or breaking the cables. Typically, the keyboard-to-body cables will have release levers for removal.
5. After removing the keyboard, observe if the motherboard is wet. If the motherboard is dry, you don't need to disassemble further.
Handling a water-damaged laptop, you need to remove the motherboard. Firstly, wear gloves and an anti-static wristband to prevent causing electrostatic discharge that could damage components. Then, detach the cables connecting components on the motherboard. Remove the screws and detach the cables connecting the motherboard to the power board.
Dry cleaning the components
Check the components you've removed to see if any parts are wet or corroded.
If the liquid you spilled on your laptop isn't distilled water, you should use a cotton swab dipped in 99% isopropyl alcohol to clean any stains. 99% isopropyl alcohol won't damage components and evaporates quickly without leaving marks. If you find any part damaged by the liquid, dip a toothbrush in alcohol, then brush away the damage marks. For the screen, mix alcohol and distilled water in a 50:50 ratio, note that tap water may contain minerals that can damage the screen, then use the softest water-absorbent cloth you have to wipe.
Quickly dry all water-logged components
You can use compressed air and spray it on the cleaned parts to speed up alcohol evaporation. Once done, you'll need to let the components air-dry in a dry place for 2 to 3 days. You can turn on a fan to speed up the drying process. Absolutely do not use a hairdryer to avoid static electricity.
Assemble the Machine
After you've dried all the components, you need to reassemble the machine to see if it can be 'saved' successfully. If not, your only option is to take the machine to laptop repair centers. Even if the laptop functions normally, it's likely that your keyboard is damaged and needs replacing. You can search for keyboard components for your machine, priced from 1 to 2 million VND, and replace them either at the store or by yourself.
If you want to try to 'save' the keyboard, you can wash the keyboard with warm water and soap. Then, air-dry the keyboard for at least 1 week before reassembling.
